Obituary for William Patrick “Hiker” Joy Jr.

William Patrick “Hiker” Joy Jr., of Milton, June 10, 2021.

He was the son of the late William Patrick “Hiker” Joy Sr. and Mary Rhetta Lannon.

Bill was a lifelong resident of Milton and a long-time parishioner of St Mary’s of the Hills Church. He officiated college football games as an umpire for 20 years with the Eastern Association of Intercollegiate Football Officials (EAIFO).

Bill was an independent business owner of William P. Joy Jr. Insurance. He was an avid gardener, primarily of tomatoes and cucumbers, which he grew for the pleasure of sharing them with friends, family and neighbors.

He leaves behind many longtime friends and was adored by his neighbors who looked out and after him, particularly during this past year during COVID. He was sharp as a tack with a sense of humor that would keep you on your toes.

Predeceased by his wife Frances C. (Olivieri) Joy. He was a devoted father of his only child Meredith Joy, and adored her partner Marjorie Siegel and her daughter Joita Siegel Diecidue and also granddog George. He was predeceased by his sisters, Peggy J. Murdoch and Eleanor M. Joy Haggerty.

William is also survived by his nieces and nephews, including Barbara MacLaughlin and her husband George of Milton, Janet Irwin and her husband Eugene of Milton, William A. Murdoch, Jr., and his wife Jayne of Centerville, and two great nephews Cole Irwin of Revere and Jack Irwin of Milton and all of the Olivieri family members.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Mary of the Hills Church, 29 St. Mary’s Road, Milton, Monday June 14 at 11:30 AM. Visitation at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON SQUARE, Monday 9:30 – 11:00 AM. Interment Milton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill’s memory may be made to John M. Barry Boys and Girls Club, 675 Watertown Street, Newton, MA 02460.
