Obituary for William F. Green

William F. "Bill" Green, beloved husband, father, grandfather, decorated United States Marine Corps officer, and former Assistant Attorney General of Massachusetts, passed away surrounded by the family he loved above all else.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Bill Green lived a life defined by courage, service, justice, and devotion to family. A graduate of Boston Latin School, Boston College, and Suffolk University, Bill dedicated his life to serving others.

As a United States Marine Corps officer, he served his country with distinction during the Vietnam War, earning two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star, Silver Star, Combat Action Ribbon, and numerous additional decorations for valor and sacrifice. Following his military service, Bill pursued a career in law and public service. As a recipient of the Reginald Heber Smith Fellowship, he dedicated himself to advancing equal justice under the law and advocating for those whose voices who often go unheard.

Bill served as an Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, later establishing a solo practice focused on civil rights law. He concluded his distinguished legal career with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, where he continued his lifelong commitment to fairness, equality, and justice.

Yet of all his accomplishments, Bill was proudest of his family. He shared a loving marriage with his beloved wife, Kathleen Green. Married in 1968, they built a life together grounded in love, laughter, and unwavering devotion for nearly six decades.

He is survived by Kathleen; his four sons, William Green and his wife, Amie; Ian Green and his wife, Chelsea; Nathan Green and his partner, Gilberto Valenzuela; and Cooper Green and his partner, Sina Zanjani. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Tucker, Colton, Hadley, Aiden, Gunnar, Rowan, Henry and Luca.

Though he earned distinction as a Marine, attorney, and public servant, those who knew Bill best understood that his greatest achievement was his family. He challenged his sons to be better men, led by example, and instilled in them the values of courage, integrity, hard work, and compassion. He was a larger-than-life presence, an unrelenting optimist, a fierce advocate, a devoted husband, and an extraordinary father. His wisdom, strength, humor, and unwavering love shaped the lives of his children and grandchildren and will continue to guide them for generations to come.

Aside from my father, Bill was the most influential man in my life and I loved him dearly. He embodied in full what constituted a real man to me. He was kind, brave, compassionate, generous, intelligent, funny and very moral. He had a wonderful marriage to Kathy to whom he was always faithful and raised four very impressive sons. I worked for him in the Attorney General's Office under Bellotti. I had never encountered anyone like him before and I never have since. Bill had an easygoing charm and charisma which drew people into his orbit. I would never have found my modest success as a defense attorney without him urging me to finish law school when I really didn't want to. Working with Bill changed all that. He inspired me to to help people who needed help, to try and make right from wrong and to be selfless. He was my exemplar all my life. The world is a much poorer place without my dear friend. I shall miss him terribly. My prayers are for his family.
