Obituary for William A. Sherman

William A. Sherman, 88, of Newton, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at the Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln, Massachusetts, on August 17, 2026. He was a beloved father, husband and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Bill was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on January 16, 1938 to Mary (Leahy) Sherman and William D. Sherman. He was raised in Somerville, Massachusetts, and spoke fondly of growing up there surrounded by family and neighborhood friends. Bill completed his Bachelors degree at Boston College in 1959. The years he spent at BC were the foundation for lifelong friendships and an enduring love for the school and its sports teams. He was a proud BC football fan, who attended games religiously for many seasons. He went on to complete a Masters Degree at the University of Maryland and was proud of his employment with the State Department at that time. When his father passed away, Bill returned to Massachusetts to care for his mother and aunt and began a career in sales. He would go on to have a rewarding partnership in business, operating a successful packaging and printing company.

Bill met his beloved wife, Lucy (Winter) Sherman, when they were both new members of a ski house that they would continue to enjoy with friends for over forty years. They were avid tennis players and members of Longwood Cricket Club for more than fifty years. They spent many summer weekends in Narragansett, Rhode Island, enjoying tennis, trips to the beach and barbecues at the Winter family home. Later on, they spent their winters enjoying time in Venice, Florida. Their life together was one filled with activity, friendship and love.

In 1988 Bill’s cherished daughter Lucy Christine Sherman was born. Bill immediately and with great enthusiasm took on the role of “best dad ever.” He was always there for Lucy. He was her best friend. Theirs was a father-daughter relationship filled with so much laughter, love and a deep mutual respect.

In the words of his friends and family, Bill was an honorable man and the best friend one could hope for. His memory is a blessing to all who knew him.
