Obituary for Thomas J. Hagan

It is with a mix of heavy hearts, a lifetime of full bellies and good times that we announce the passing of Thomas J. Hagan, who left us peacefully on Monday, April 27, 2026. Tom lived exactly 31,534 days full of shenanigans and fun.

Tom was born and grew up with a mischievous spirit, Tom grew up and raised his children in Milton, spent many summers at Wrinkle Point on Cape Cod in West Dennis, many winters at Royal Wood in Naples Florida and eventually settled in Marion for his final years.

He was a man of many passions, but perhaps none as visible as his large backyard garden and micro poultry farm. Tom firmly believed that there was no such thing as "too many" tomato plants. His harvest always found its way into the kitchen, where he reigned supreme as the family chef. Tom viewed recipes merely as "suggestions"—he rarely followed one exactly, ensuring that no meal ever tasted the same way twice, though they were always made with love. For many years Tom raised turkeys, ducks and chickens in the backyard. There were many, many varied eggs and several slaughter days that most of us wish we stayed away from. Tom greatly enjoyed being on the ocean. He loved his boat, the Royal T, where he spent countless hours fishing, checking his lobster traps, and making many of us sea sick.

Long before he was a fixture puttering in his garden, Tom was known for his speed. He was a track star in both high school and at Boston College, a competitive spark that he carried with him throughout his life. Whether he was sprinting toward a finish line, chasing a birdie on the golf course, or walking his beloved dog- Tasha, Tom was always on the move.

Tom was a Milton High ‘57 alum, a BC grad ‘62, and received his MBA from Case Western Reserve University. Tom proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was an active member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts.

Holidays were Tom’s time to shine. He laid claim to Thanksgiving, the 4th of July, and St. Patrick’s Day, turning them into legendary events for his family and friends. The celebrations simply won't be the same without his presence in the kitchen.

Tom leaves behind a family who will forever cherish his memory: beloved husband of Judith (Nisius) Hagan. Loving father of MaryEllen Woycik and her husband Timothy of Wrentham, Susan Hagan of Marion and Katherine Halpin and her husband Thomas of West Boylston. Grandfather of Christopher, Maggie, Tom, Greta, Rose and Griffin. Brother of John “Jack” Hagan and his wife Claire of Hingham. A goddaughter and a smattering of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family - we will all miss his quest for merriment.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Agatha Church, 432 Adams Street, Milton Friday May 8 at 10:30 am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, East Milton Square, Thursday 5-7 PM. Interment Milton Cemetery.

In remembrance, the family suggests that you plant an extra tomato plant in your garden this spring.

Beautiful tribute to my birthday buddy (Dec 26). Mr. Hagan (I could NOT call him "Tom") was the best cook, gardener, and supportive adult when I was growing up. Love to all the Hagans, from Michelle Monti (and co.)
