Obituary for Thomas J. Crowley

Quincy – Thomas J. Crowley, Captain, Boston Police Department, Retired, age 85, of Quincy, formerly of Jamaica Plain, died peacefully, Sunday, August 25, 2024.

Thomas was born in Jamaica Plain, a place he dearly loved, and he graduated from Jamaica Plain High School in 1957. He explored a few professions, including a stint in the U.S. Air Force, before joining the Boston Police Department in 1968. He would go on to have a long career, rising through the ranks until he became a Captain in 1989, at which point he was assigned as South Boston District Commander at the new station on West Broadway, the position he retired from in 2003.

He graduated from the former Boston State College in 1973 and it was as a student there that he met his beloved wife Elizabeth M. (McCarthy) Crowley, also of Jamaica Plain. They made their home in Quincy and were married for 48 years. Thomas also leaves his children Maura E. Crowley of Quincy, Caitlin F. Crowley and her husband Matthew Koroghlian of Brooklyn, NY, and Brendan T. Crowley of Brooklyn, NY.

He had a memorable sense of humor and was deeply devoted to his family. He was happiest at home, where he enjoyed Brigham’s coffee ice cream, playing with his kids and his dogs, watching the Red Sox, and the music of Gene Autry and The Irish Hit Parade.

He is predeceased by his dear Grandmother Mary MacBeth, his parents Joe and Winnie (MacBeth) Crowley, his siblings Robert and Bonnie Crowley, and his lifelong best friend John Corboy.

My sympathy to the Crowley family upon losing such a beautiful presence in your lives. Like many he was my first Sgt. in 1987. He was funny and kind and would take the time to talk to and get to know the "new kids . His sincere advice taught us how to be good officers and better people. His treatment of a wonderful young man with Downs syndrome who came and volunteered at Dist 6, spoke volumes of Tommy Crowley the leader and the man. I can only imagine him being a wonderful father/grandfather and husband. Loved by all and I'm sure he will be welcomed into the open arms of so many in heaven. You will be missed..... until we meet again my friend. God Bless to you all.

Tom and George Stedman were my training officers in district 2. He had a drill sense of humor and always kept me safe. I worked with him and for him until I became a sergeant in 1993. I could always depend on him to give me sound advice, not that I always followed iI😎. After he retired I would run into him from time to time and he was always pleasant. He was a good man.

If you were lucky enough to work with of for Captain Crowley you knew you were in a good place. Yes, as a boss, he wore those captain bars but he was always one of the men. He was classy, funny and a man who took pride in his work. May he rest in peace.
