Stephen Minot Weld Jr., 77, of Milton, MA, passed away on Wednesday, June 25th, 2025, at Milton Hospital. He was born on December 11th, 1947 to Stephen and Elizabeth Weld (née Eaton) in Milton. He was a graduate of Milton Academy, Bowdoin College, and the University of Pennsylvania. He served in the US Army as a translator in Washington, DC during the Vietnam War.

Steve was a beloved husband, father, friend, and grandfather who found joy in nature and cherished time spent outdoors, especially on the water. He had a deep love for paddling, rowing, and sailing, and worked as a naval architect in Boston and New Bedford (C. Raymond Hunt Associates) before retiring. His true passion lay with small wooden boats, attending The WoodenBoat Show and the Small Craft Regatta in Mystic Connecticut for many years. He built several boats, paddles, and many other small projects in his woodshop, and was frequently tinkering with household items to make them last longer.

Steve cared deeply about the natural world and worked to protect it—through his involvement with the Chocorua Lake Conservancy and in quiet, everyday acts like clearing sticks and litter from hiking trails or from along the shoreline. He was a member of the choir at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Milton, sharing his voice and spirit with his community.

Lately, Steve could often be found on the porch of his summer home in New Hampshire, re-reading favorite books and enjoying the breeze and the quiet sounds of the surrounding forest. He loved to tell anyone who would listen which bird, flower, or tree was nearby. A lifelong lover of literature, he was well-read and always ready with a quip, pun, or quote to fit the conversation.

Steve’s greatest joy and source of pride was his family. He met his wife, Linda (née Bank), in 1982 through work at Stull and Lee Architects, and they would have celebrated 38 years of marriage this year. They shared a love of the outdoors and went on many camping and sailing adventures on lakes and oceans both local and Great.

Steve’s daughter, Ruth, was born in 1992, and inherited Steve’s joy in nature and reading. Ruth and her husband, Mike Borys, live with their daughter in Quincy, and Steve loved spending time with his granddaughter. Steve’s community also includes many friends in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire, his lifelong homes, and extended family across the world.

Visiting hours will be held at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON SQUARE, Wednesday July 2nd from 5-7 PM. Family and friends invited. Interment at Milton Cemetery, 211 Centre Street, Milton, Thursday, July 3rd, at 10 AM, meeting at the front gate. A memorial service will follow on September 27, 2025 at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Milton. Details to be announced.
