Obituary for Solange Verdieu
Solange Verdieu passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on December 3, 2025.
Solange Marie Jean-Paul Verdieu was born on February 19, 1936, in Dupont Pétion-Ville, Haiti. The second child and eldest daughter of Maurice (d. 1972) and Simone (Baptiste, d. 1976) Jean-Paul, she grew up in a close-knit, hardworking family rooted in faith, community, and tradition. Her early education at Anne Marie Javouhey School, Madame Vilaire School, and Centre Managerie laid the foundation for her lifelong commitment to learning and service. With a natural talent for teaching and a gift for patience, she began her career as an educator at L’Ecole Nationale de Thomassin, where she helped shape young minds with warmth and discipline.
In 1971, at the age of thirty-five, Solange bravely embarked on a new chapter by migrating to the United States and settling in Boston, Massachusetts. The transition demanded resilience: she learned a new language, adapted to an unfamiliar culture, and navigated the challenges of starting over in a new country. Despite these hurdles, she remained steadfast in her dedication to her family. Through her hard work, she helped relatives establish themselves across the United States, Canada, and Spain, providing not only financial support but also guidance and encouragement.
Solange held several jobs before securing a position at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) as a dietary aide—a role she fulfilled with professionalism and pride for twenty-seven years. Her work ethic, reliability, and compassion earned her the respect of colleagues and patients alike. She retired from MGH in 1999 to care for her grandson, Randy, a responsibility she embraced with immense love. Never one to remain idle, she continued serving her community as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at Belmont Manor Rehabilitation Center on weekends, retiring from that role in 2007. This allowed her the time and freedom to pour even more of herself into the lives of her grandchildren, their friends, and the children of her nieces and nephews—offering the same care, guidance, and steady presence she had always given her family.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Solange was treasured for her profound generosity and her instinctive ability to nurture. She possessed a rare emotional intelligence—an innate understanding of when someone needed comfort, advice, or simply a warm meal. Family and friends alike gravitated toward her steady presence. Her home was a sanctuary of love, laughter, and Haitian hospitality, where no one ever left hungry or unsupported.
As the matriarch of the Jean-Paul family, Solange upheld cherished traditions and created new ones. Known for her mastery of Haitian cuisine, she eagerly taught others how to prepare the dishes that defined her culture—passing down more than recipes, but also the stories and memories that accompanied them. Her influence extended far beyond her immediate family; she shaped an entire community through her kindness, strength, and unwavering devotion.
Solange is survived by her two daughters, Dominique Verdieu and Michelle Williams-Masson (son-in-law Irvens), her grandchildren, Daryl-Randall (Randy) Williams and Zaria Williams, and her former son-in-law, Daryl Williams. She also leaves behind her siblings: Fritz Jean-Paul (Marie Yolaine d. 2011), Mona Pamphile (Franck d. 2011), Eddy Jean-Paul (Lola), Erick Jean-Paul, Maurice Jean-Paul (Mirielle), Gerald Jean-Paul (Clara), and Claudel Jean-Paul (Florence); twenty nieces and nephews; and a wide circle of cousins who loved her dearly. She was predeceased by her older brother, Klebert (d. 1988).
May her soul find everlasting peace, and may she continue dancing in paradise, surrounded by the love she so freely gave on Earth.
