Obituary for Shirley J Williams

Shirley Jean Williams was met at Heaven’s Gate by an entourage of family and dear friends on April 10th, 2025. She was born on December 17th, 1945, in Bessemer, Alabama to the late James B. Brewster and Della C. (Robinson) Brewster. At an early age, Shirley gave her life to Christ at First Baptist Church | Old Jonesboro, Bessemer, AL.

Shirley graduated from Brighton High School in Brighton AL. After graduating from high school, Shirley began her career as a Nursing Assistant. Upon relocating to Boston, Massachusetts, she pursued her passion for beauty and care by completing cosmetology school. She later joined Stone & Webster/Shaw Group, where she devoted over 20 years of dedicated service before retiring. Shirley was well known for her jovial laugh and golden heart. Generous by nature, Shirley never hesitated to help anyone in need. A true ‘people’s person,’ Shirley never met a stranger; her warmth and laughter left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. She was the glue that held the family together, always willing to give of herself to bring joy and happiness to those she loved.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, James & Della Brewster, brothers, James “Jack” Brewster, Fletcher Moss, Charles Brewster, and Robert Brewster, as well as her sister, Teresia Brewster.

Shirley is lovingly survived by her devoted son, Daryl (Elise) Williams; and her cherished grandchildren, Artis Williams, Deanna Williams, Deanisha Williams, and Daryl Williams, Jr. She also leaves to cherish her memory her beloved sisters, Dianna McMilian and Ester Williams; her brother, Willie (Florazine) Brewster; her special niece, Kenna Williams Grace; her special nephew, Antonio Brewster; and her dear friend, Irene Watkins. Shirley will be fondly remembered by a host of other loving relatives and friends.

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free. I followed the path God laid for me. I took His hand when I heard Him call; I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, to laugh, to love, to work or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way. I found that peace at the close of day. If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, ah yes, these things, I too, will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life’s been full, I’ve savored much: Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief; don’t lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free.

I won’t complain !
