Obituary for Sean M Tierney
Sean M. Tierney, 46 of Weymouth, quietly and unexpectedly passed away on January 9th. Sean was raised in Guilford, CT.
A graduate of Xavier High School in Middletown, CT, he was the recipient of the Christian Furstenberg Memorial Award as a freshman and the Senior Award on the soccer team following the team’s State Championship victory. Responsibility and service were instilled early in Sean; he was active in Scouts early in his life, through high school, alongside his father and brother.Sean spent a gap year studying at the Gymnasium Kirchenfeld in Bern, Switzerland, and went on to graduate from the University of New Hampshire.
Sean began his career at the University of New Hampshire which is where he formed his love of academia, computer science, digital media, and political science. After a successful tenure with Azenia, Circus, and as the Interactive Director at Neoscape in Boston, he went back to the academic world joining Northeastern University, and then onto Boston University as Director of Interactive Development.
Sean had a brilliant mind and a lifelong fascination with things mechanical and technical, always having a wide range of active creative outlets ranging from Lego creations, design/construction of his own drones, meticulously maintaining his boat, to caring for his historic home. He was multi-lingual and played the viola. He was passionate about skiing, soccer, and mountain biking.
Sean was deeply curious and had an appetite to learn, from books, hands on experiences, and especially from his father and his beloved community of diverse and talented friends. He was fearless in tackling major, highly complex projects and, along with his friends, took on perhaps his most revered project, replacing one of the diesel engines in his boat.
A voracious reader and, at times, a couch potato who loved a good James Bond marathon or watching the Science Channel, Motortrend channel, or How it’s made. He was quick and accurate when watching Jeopardy. Sean had a big smile, an infectious laugh, and a fun-loving sense of humor. He frequently made eyes roll by telling intellectual or dad jokes. Sean was truly accomplished and his friends would goad him – are you bad at anything?
He often “paid it forward” by offering his knowledge, teaching what he knew, and why things were done a certain way. He wanted anyone that learned from him to be capable on their own. Sean would help everyone and anyone; kindness and generosity were engrained in his nature.
Sean shared the love of the sea with his wife, and, as an avid boater and skilled mariner, planned and tackled adventures and did not discriminate power vs sail. He and his wife are active and enthusiastic members of the boating community, as a part of Wessagusset Yacht Club in Weymouth, MA; Braintree Yacht Club in Braintree, MA; and the Marina at Bay Pointe.
In lieu of children, Sean adored his loving companions, his dogs. Sean and the dogs were always keen for lazy days in the house, a ride on the boat to World’s End, or playing in the snow.
In his 46 years, Sean embodied the definition of Renaissance Man.
Sean is survived by his loving wife, Melissa and their beloved dogs; his parents, Gary and Virginia Tierney, of Guilford, CT; his brother, Brian Tierney, of McCaul, ID; and his sister, Megan Bryson (Jeffrey), of Fairfield, CT; as well as by his two nephews, Aidan and Kieran Bryson; his mother-in law Catherine Daniels; his sister-in-law, Christine Sharp and nephew, Jonathan Sharp-Hunt, along with numerous beloved aunts, uncles and cousins. He is also survived by, not only a close circle of friends, but countless number of very dear friends and colleagues.
A private celebration of life will be communicated at a later date.
Sean’s generosity will continue to be impactful through charitable giving in his name. Donations can be directed to either the Continuum Arts Collective; www.continuumarts.org, or the Wildland firefighter foundation; https://wffoundation.org/ or to The Trustees of Reservations; www.thetrustees.org
