Obituary for Sean F.X. O'Brien

Sean Francis Xavier O'Brien passed away peacefully in the wee hours of Saturday morning, November 22, 2025 at Milton Hospital. He had spent the week before reminiscing and "telling many stories" with family and friends both in person and on the telephone. He left this world with the comforting knowledge that his life, loyalty and friendship left an impact on many.

Sean was born October 4, 1954, the fifth son of Thomas and Mary (Maguire) O'Brien. He grew up in West Roxbury MA where he was joined by two more brothers and a sister. His love of hockey began early as the O'Brien family home was across the VFW Parkway from the MDC ice rink. He played New England Junior Hockey and continued throughout his college career at Fitchburg State University.

Sean's professional career began at Boston Basics where he worked with inner city Boston youth, he then went into the financial printing business where he excelled in sales and forming lifelong friendships. He lived in Boston, Braintree, Quincy, Cape Cod and Milton. An avid golfer, Sean was an active member of Wollaston Golf Course, where he served on the Board of Directors and Cummaquid Golf Course in Yarmouth.

Friends and family remember Sean's generosity of spirit along with a quick wit and a love of good times. He enjoyed reading, hosting, traveling and playing as many beautiful golf courses as he was able.

He leaves brothers, Kevin and his wife Claire of Walpole, Emmett and his wife Sue of Cohasset, Brian and his wife Chris of Old Lyme CT, Michael and his wife Sarah Laidler of South Kingston RI, Patrick and his wife Kate McKenney of Melrose, and sister Maryanne Norris and husband John of Milton, along with 17 nieces and nephews and many grand nieces and nephews. He joins his brother, Thomas O'Brien of Stowe VT and his niece Ellen Rose O'Brien in eternal life.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Visitation Parish, Saint Elizabeth Church, 350 Reedsdale Road, Milton, Saturday, November 29 at 10:00 AM. I went to Boston Tech with Sean. I think we first met in 1968. Just recently, a friend and I from Tech decided to try and put together a reunion of sorts during the summer of 2026. One of the first guys we thought we should contact was Sean. I was surprised, and quite saddened to find that he had passed just a few months previous. Although Sean was mostly a high school friend, kind of the way it was when kids lived in different parts of the city, we would run into each other from time to time for years after graduation. No matter how long it had been, it was always a pleasure to see him and catch up. He was always the same kind, smart, funny kid I had met when he was 14. I would like to offer my condolences to Sean's family and friends. Mickey Doherty

I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Sean at Boston basics 40 years ago. He was a class act, always willing to share his knowledge and thoughts on what to do on certain cases. We lost contact and then I walked into a restaurant in Milton lower mills. He jumped up and came over to say hi and great to see you. We talked about the old times and what we were doing now. I wish I knew he belonged to Wollaston golf course. My house backs up to the course and receive many, many balls in my back yard. I know he would have denied hitting any on my property but I could give him some groan out it. Sean is gone to soon but will not be forgotten. God bless the entire family. 💥🙏🙏🙏🙏💥

Our condolences to the O'Brien family. Sean has always been good to me and both my son's. Rory and Emmett. For over twenty years I have been sharing Sean and I stories of playing in the Fallon Cup. How fortunate I was for Sean to invite me to play in. I have played thousands of rounds of golf in my life. And many tournaments. But the Fallon cup was the one tournament to be invited to. Sean made that happen. A true test of golf. Our matches were tough and exciting. Four days of pins and needles. First year, we lost in the finals. Second year we won our flight. Third year, Sean played great and I played terrible but we still made it to Sunday. To this day, it has been my favorite golf memories. We were a great team. Sean was very competitive but had a calmness about him that helped me with my nervousness. When I was down , he would pick me up. Only second to my sons, he was the best partner I ever had the pleasure to play with. These memories I would not have without Sean. However, all that said, more importantly he treated my boys , who caddied for him , with respect and kindness. When others didn't. Sean was a topic at our supper table many times. They would come home and tell Sean stories in their teenage boys way that were hysterical. Sean always made them laugh. As a dad, what's better than that for my boys. He was a great example that I wanted my boys to be around. Sean was not only family, he was my friend. May the wind always be at your back my friend. You will be missed. God bless. Emmett, Rory ,and Emmett Maguire

Maryanne, Pat, Emmett and all, I am heartbroken to hear of Sean's passing. While the years may have passed since we have seen one another, I feel like he and I grew up together in so many ways and he will always be part of who I am today. I am forever grateful for that time, for his many funny Sean-ism quips that still pop in my head and make me smile today and for his introducing me to so many of lifes fun adventures...that little VW Beetle, riding to Newport on the back of his motorcycle, his learning the ropes of fine cooking from his buddy Mike, his pride at climbing Mt Katahdin, his being a property owner and Braintree landlord when only in his early 20's, and on and on...he knew how to live a full life even back then, and I am grateful to have been part of it. Most importantly, he loved each of you, his family, so, so deeply. Sending my deepest condolences to you all. Fondly, Dina (Driscoll) Nichols
