Samuel ("Sam") Stein, a native of Toledo, Ohio, and longtime resident of Nashua, New Hampshire, and more recently Milton, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, July 20, 2026, at the age of 86.

Born on December 16, 1939, to Esther and Leonard Stein, Sam grew up in Toledo and proudly served in the United States Army before graduating from the University of Toledo. He later earned an MBA in Finance from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Sam enjoyed a successful career as a financial and business executive, serving in leadership roles including Chief Financial Officer, Vice President, General Manager, and Chief Operating Officer at several companies over many decades.

While serving in the Army, Sam developed an interest in aviation. Years later, he fulfilled a dream by earning his private pilot's license and eventually owning his own airplane. One of his favorite adventures was flying to Nantucket for breakfast—a simple pleasure that perfectly combined two of his favorite things: flying and breakfast.

Sam found great joy outdoors. He loved walking the trails with his beloved dog, Paloma, and some of his happiest memories were made on family trips to Acadia National Park. Alongside his partner, Ellen, and family, he cherished evenings in Bar Harbor and hiking the park's beautiful trails.

A devoted baseball fan, Sam grew up cheering for the Cleveland Indians. After moving to New England, he became a dedicated Red Sox fan and delighted in finally seeing them win the World Series.

Those who knew Sam will remember the genuine happiness he found in life's simple moments—with family, with his dog, and wherever the next trail or flight might lead him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Esther and Leonard Stein, and his brother, Donald Stein.

He is survived by his loving partner of 32 years, Ellen Barr; his daughter, Mara Kochaba, and her husband, Matt; his daughter, Karen Stein, and her husband, Matt Shanley; his son, Andrew Stein, and his wife, Erin Fera; his cherished grandchildren, Antonia and Miles Fera-Stein; his step-son, Simón Rios; his step-granddaughter, Gabriela Rios; his brother Bill Stein, and his wife Sue; his sister-in-law Betty, and his many nieces, nephews and extended family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Angell Animal Medical Center in honor of Sam's lifelong love of dogs. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on October 3rd, 2026 (12-3) at the Blue Hills Trailside Museum in Milton, Massachusetts.
