Our beloved Roberta A. Cooke attended Dante Alighieri in Cambridge for grade school and Lewis Middle School before going on to earn her GED.

Roberta valued the importance of hard work and dedication. Throughout her life, she carried these qualities into her work. She began her career at New England Wholesale, then moved on to Gilman Brothers in Dorchester. From there, she started her career as a Data Processor for DRW in Canton, where she would eventually retire after 20+ years of service. Her strong work ethic and commitment to those around her led her to come out of retirement. She then began working with JSC Transportation. She was devoted to her “sweet babies,” as she affectionately referred to them.

Roberta cherished everyone in her life, and it brought her great joy to make others happy. She loved being surrounded by her family and friends and did whatever was necessary to bring them together. Every Sunday, she prepared huge dinners for her family and anyone else who wanted a plate. There was always room for many more at her home.

Christmas and Thanksgiving were two of her favorite holidays. She made sure the holidays were celebrated in a way that everyone would remember. At Christmas, she made sure there was a gift under the tree for everyone. Watching everyone open their gifts was the greatest gift she could receive. If she could have it her way, the gifts would overflow all the way to the door, just like the old days. She wanted everyone to feel special, loved, and remembered.

Thanksgiving was a whole production of its own. She spent days preparing, making sure no detail was overlooked. Her grandchildren helped, and anyone who walked through her door was sure to be put to work! The menu seemed endless, and everything she touched was chef’s kiss. And, of course, no one left empty-handed. Everyone went home with enough leftovers and to-go plates to last for days. That was her love language: making sure everyone was fed, taken care of, and surrounded by love.

Later in life she gave her life to God and was baptized at Morning Star Baptist Church. Listening to gospel music and humming off-key was her thing. It kept her calm throughout the day and helped her fall asleep at night. When she wasn’t humming and rocking, she loved playing Pokeno, enjoying any card or board game, going to the casino and, most importantly, watching her game shows while scratching her tickets.

Roberta had a special way of bringing people together, whether it was through a home-cooked meal, a game, music, or simply spending time with the people she loved. She expressed one of her happiest moments were seeing all her loved ones come together for her 80th birthday. She found happiness in making others happy, and that is a gift that will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved her.

Though we will miss her presence, her Sunday dinners, her humming, and all the little things that made her who she was, we will carry her love and memories with us always. Her love was unconditional, her heart was the biggest, and her impact will never be forgotten.
