Obituary for Peter Baer Schneidman

Peter Baer Schneidman passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on May 24, 2025 after a brave and courageous battle with esophageal cancer.

Peter was a dedicated husband to his wife and the love of his life, Marie-Claire, a devoted father to his beloved dog Riley and cat Chester, a beloved brother of Jon (wife Michele) and Annie (husband Matt), an incredibly special uncle to Charlie, Jane, Declan, and Callum, and was lovingly embraced as a son by his mother-in-law Dominique. He also leaves behind countless friends and colleagues from all phases of his life, especially from Maine, Louisiana, Raquette Lake, Connecticut, and Boston.

Peter was predeceased by his beloved mother Cheryl Shapiro Schneidman and his father Leonard Schneidman. Born on June 12, 1974, in New York City, Peter grew up in Sherborn, Massachusetts. He graduated from Dover-Sherborn High School and went on to attend the University of Maine, where he was a proud member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He later earned his MBA from Louisiana State University, all while enjoying many LSU football games, crawfish boils, and gumbo during his time in the South.

Peter’s heart always belonged to summer camp. He spent over 30 years at his beloved camp in Raquette Lake, New York - as a camper, counselor, and ultimately as Director of Operations for nearly two decades. It was his home away from home, a place where he found joy, purpose, and lifelong friendships.

In 2023, in a beautiful twist of fate in support of his wife’s career, Peter and Marie-Claire moved back to Boston, where Peter fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a business owner. In July 2024, he purchased Rose’s Automotive in Sherborn, Massachusetts, a place of deep personal meaning. Rose’s was where Peter had his very first job as a shop boy in 1994, and where his father, Len, remained a loyal customer until his death.

Peter had an incredible passion for life and loved traveling the world with his wife, trips to Raquette Lake, spending time at his brother’s farm in the Berkshires, enjoying a delicious meal (usually Chinese food), waterskiing, driving his Porsche and red Corvette, and making everyone around him laugh with his dry and typically grumpy sense of humor. The most important quality of Peter was his strength and determination – everything he did in life, he did wholeheartedly and accomplished every dream he ever had – to be the best husband, son, uncle, brother-in-law, business owner, and friend. He fought until his last breath, and while he was taken far too soon, he will never leave our hearts. Until we ride again PBS.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, from 2:00–3:00 PM EST at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON SQUARE, Milton, MA 02186. Following the service, we will gather to honor Peter in the way he would have wanted—through shared stories, laughter, Chinese food, and the warmth of those who loved him most.

To honor Peter’s memory in the most meaningful way, the Peter Baer Schneidman Camp Fund has been established at Boston Community Pediatrics (BCP), which will give children the opportunity to have their own summer camp experiences and experience the same magic Pete enjoyed for many years—especially children who otherwise would not have access to this
opportunity. By helping send children to camp, you and the children who get to have their first summer camp experiences will carry Pete’s spirit forward in the most special way.

In lieu of flowers, the family, per Peter’s final wishes, we kindly ask you to carry Pete’s spirit forward and support the Peter Baer Schneidman Camp Fund. This fund will make it possible to send over 100 kids, primarily from low-income backgrounds, to summer camp each year.

Over twenty years of camp together, and roommates for nearly five years of that...the memories too numerous to count. Carpooling to the camp office, side-gig skate sessions at RCDS, endless camp shenanigans and cherished time on the water. Miss you Pete. So grateful for your friendship.

If there was ever any doubt that the best friends you ever make are in college, Pete "Jager" Schneidman put that to rest. We lost touch over the years and I am so happy to understand that his way too short life was so rich and so obviously and positively impactful of others. Rest easy Jaeger.

I only knew Pete a short while but when I first met him I could tell he was an amazing person. Pete hired my boys Johnny and Nick and treated them like family and never forgot an occasion to express his kindness and love. The boys admired him as I did. Prayer for Pete and his wife Marie-Claire and and their family. God Bless🙏

I am so sorry to hear of Pete's passing. After learning that he had bought Roses's I stopped in to see him a couple of months ago when I was in Sherborn. It had been a long time since he had sat at our dinner table making us all laugh, during those years at Dover Sherborn. He still made me laugh when I talked to him that day! Annie, Jon, my heart goes out to all of you and your families. Pat Martin

Annie I am so sad to read about the passing of your loving brother. We were all rooting for him and your family. So happy to learn about his love of Summer camp. Camps can be life-changing for many, especially those who need that kind of mentorship and kindness. It's such a wonderful foundation to establish in Peter's name. Sending you love and strength Kathleen Faherty

I met Pete in the summer of 1991, my first as a counselor at Raquette Lake. There were many memories that flooded back when I got the news of his passing...he was part of many of the more interesting moments (most cannot be shared here :)) from my early adult years. Pete called all us Mobile guys "hayseeds," and he visited Mobile a few times. In fact, he lived in Louisiana for some time after college. He was genuinely himself, which is honestly one of the greatest ways to live. Life is short. While it had been some time since seeing him, I'm just glad to have known Pete- he lived fully.

Fond memories of great times at Raquette Lake Camps. Pete was in the boat when I fell in the lake and got the "SPLASH" We had so much fun at Camp Norm Kaufman

I was very sad that Pete was not at Raquette Lake last summer. I was truly looking forward to seeing him again and thanking him for inviting me back. He was a very kind hearted human being. May his beautiful soul be resting in peace. Condolence to all his loved ones.

I've met Pete early 2025 together with Marie-Claire who's a childhood friend of mine. 1 day touring together in Frankfurt was enough to leave a mark in my heart and my memory. Such a straight forward man, with enthusiasm for life, looking for ways to make his dreams come true; I know that there's much more about him that words cannot describe, though, my point is that in 1 day meeting him he left fingerprints for eternity. May God bless your soul and embrace you in heaven, because what you left behind in this world was a piece of eternity in each of us.

Pete was another son to me. I will keep in my heart all the precious moments I had with him and my daughter Marie-Claire; as well as with his family (his brother Jon and his family, his sister Annie and his family, and his dad Len and Bridget) and friends. He was the best spouse a mom could dream for her daughter and the best son-in-law. It's hard to process right now, but he will always have a special place in my heart; and every moment I spent with Pete and my daughter were a blessing.

My condolences to the family and friends. As Town Justice in Raquette Lake, I had the honor to officiate at the wedding of Pete and Marie Claire in June 2017. Pete always had a smile and their wedding was a wonderful occasion filled with love. Rest in Peace Pete. Mitchell Edelstein

You are the most selfless person I knew. It was a privilege working for you and with you. Our friendship wasn't just work. It was a family of people working for a greater good. Your ideology of paying it forward was not lost on me. There are too many things that I just can't say but thank you for coming into my life.

Favorite memories of Pete for me were on my early morning walks at Raquette, while camp was sleeping, I would see Pete. Over by maintenance, docking his boat, in the kitchen getting coffee. We would share a morning greeting, and usually a laugh. I will miss him, and his sense of humor..

Pete was my counselor and a friend. He had an impact on my life as a kid and when I went back to RLC in 2010 it was wonderful to see him there, in his element. Rest easy brother. Scotty Berman
