Obituary for Paul M. Finerty
Paul M. Finerty, age 90, of Medfield, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday night, September 27, 2024, at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Married for 55 years, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara A. Finerty.
Born in Milton on November 28, 1933, he was a dear son of the late Francis J. and Mary Finerty. He was raised in Milton, was a graduate of Milton High School and attended Northeastern University. He was a veteran, having served in the US Army. He was employed for many years by Honeywell Information Systems in computer sales.
Paul married Barbara and lived in Braintree, East Boston, Wilmington, Vernon, CT, and settled in Medfield in 1975. Paul was a very friendly and outgoing man. He was part of a weekly coffee group with his Medfield friends. For over 15 years he organized monthly luncheons with his high school friends, and was instrumental in planning his high school class reunions. He was such a good friend to so many, including current neighbors, past neighbors, former co-workers, his nieces and nephews, and his cousins.
He loved to travel with his wife and family to many places in the United States, as well as to Ireland; however, his favorite vacations were those spent with his family at Mohawk Island, Winnisquam Lake, New Hampshire, and Thompson Lake, Maine.
He was an avid Boston sports fan, especially the Patriots for which he was a season ticket holder for many decades. He was also a fan of his alma mater’s hockey team, the Northeastern University Huskies, and he attended many Frozen Four tournaments with family members.
He was a very charitable man, supporting organizations that benefited less fortunate children, and those that focused on US veterans. He volunteered for many years at the Medfield Food Cupboard.
He is survived by three daughters, Laura F. Kellner and her husband, Richard of Vernon, CT, Susan M. Finerty of Bedford, NH, and Diane T. Firth and her husband, Christopher of Bellingham; a son, Paul M. Finerty, Jr., and his wife, Jacalyn of Medway; eight grandchildren, Maureen, Douglas, Lindsay, Derek, Tristan, Haley, Natalie, and Lyla; three great grandchildren, Elliette, Corbin and Makenna; many loving nieces and nephews, his dear sister-in-law and loving companion, Kay, and his faithful feline companion, Emmy. He was a loving and devoted son and brother. He was predeceased by his late brothers and sisters, Mary, Francis, Patricia, Rita, Richard and Gerald.
Paul’s family would like to extend their deepest heartfelt gratitude to all of the staff who cared for him at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Many of the staff expressed that he was well loved because of his bravery, his kindness and his appreciation of the care he received.
