Obituary for Matthew Keane

Matthew William Keane, of Milton, MA, New Orleans, LA and Richmond, VA. He is survived by his best friend and twin soul Trang Le, his parents William and Frances (Egan) Keane, his sister Elizabeth, loving aunts and uncles Kathleen Keane, Susan Egan, James and Robin Egan, Marianne and John Penella, and his cousins and family dogs.

Matt was born in Indiana and grew up in Milton, MA. His love of books and music was evident from an early age, and hours of his teenage years were spent browsing CDs and guitar magazines at Newbury Comics and Tower Records. He taught himself to play guitar by listening to his favorite songs with his ear pressed up against the stereo speakers.

Matt went to BC High and Harvard, where his sense of humor was finely honed. His excellent memorization skills delighted and perhaps unnerved his friends and family, as he demonstrated his ability to recite huge chunks of comedic dialogue from his favorite shows and movies.

He moved to New Orleans for medical school at Tulane University, where an even greater level of appreciation for live music was unlocked, as well as his affinity for hats and fine dining. He spent 20 years there, working in pediatrics as a chief resident and later as a pediatric hospitalist. He loved the kids he treated and always took great pleasure in telling friends and family about them.

He then moved to Richmond for new adventures and to be with Trang and her son, Ben Williams, who adored his Uncle Matt. He held a faculty position as a hospitalist at The Children’s Hospital of Richmond. Together, Matt and Trang discovered new favorite restaurants and adopted two very good dogs, Timba and Red Bean. Matt loved books and dogs. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your local library or ASPCA.

Memorial Visitation will be held at the Dolan Funeral Home, 1140 Washington Street, DORCHESTER LOWER MILLS on Saturday, June 28th from 2-3PM. Memorial Service to begin at 3PM. Relatives and friends invited.

I only got to know Matt very briefly and was so impressed with his care and dedication. So sad we did not get to know him longer and find out all these wonderful things he was interested in! Our sympathies to his family.

Matt was a roommate of mine at Harvard over 25 years ago. We didn't keep up since then, but he was the nicest, kindest, funniest guy. So thoughtful and a great guitar-player! He's just the kind of guy you'd want to sit around with and talk all Saturday night in a dorm room--when there's a loud party in one room, and other people are sitting in another room having a quiet, hilarious, but meaningful conversation, Matt would be at the heart of it. That he became such a devoted pediatrician is exactly the kind of career I would have expected from such a good-hearted person with a brilliant mind and a serving soul. I never met Trang & Ben, but my heart goes out them, and Matt's parents, sister, and aunts & uncles. As I am filled with sadness, thinking of Matt also brings back the memories of all of the others who roomed with him back in Quincy House: Josh, Ben H, Ben R, Dave, Jisup, Marc, Matthew, and Phil, and the people we were then, when we all had the good fortune to share time with Matt. I hope all are as well as can be in this sorrowful time.

[to site editor--I would like to amend my memory, from Dan Epstein to say this instead] Matthew was a roommate of mine at Harvard over 25 years ago. But I remember Matt so fondly, and in this moment of grief I am also brought back into that time and the times I shared with him, as well as the other guys in our Quincy house suites: Josh, Ben H, Ben R, Dave, Jisup, Marc, Matthew, and Phil. I miss those times, and I am filled with sorrow at Matt's passing.

I was a pediatric faculty member at Tulane and knew Matt from the time he became a resident. He was one of the most decent people I ever knew. He was devoted to his patients and always available to them. He had a wonderful sense of humor and we loved discussing books. Matt was a bulwark of the pediatrics program and especially its educational mission. We kept in touch after he moved to Richmond and I will dearly miss him. Bob Hopkins

To Matt's friends and family: I worked with Matt as a nurse at Tulane hospital. What an amazing doctor and human being he was. I feel so lucky for the years I was able to work with him and the things I learned from him. His patients were also very lucky. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Dr. Keane is how I always knew him as he was one of the best pediatric attendings I had during my residency! I was saddened to hear of his passing and want his family to know that he helped to mold so many amazing physicians and the world of medicine is a much better place because of his teaching! The world is also a much better place because of the person he was and the lives he touched!

Matt was a light of inspiration for residents and medical students reaching so many during his time at CHOR. He impacted many especially his patients and trainees. We will miss you Matt. Dr. Hendricks-Munoz

What a beautiful human being, Matt Keane. He was my medical school and pediatric residency classmate. We were new faculty together. As a freshly minted and immediately beloved clinician-educator in the turbulent post-Katrina rebuilding years, he shouldered immense responsibility for the department, the school, the city—he earned much more praise for this than he would ever accept, in his humility. We trusted his judgement implicitly. He was brilliant, erudite, often darkly but never cruelly witty. He was consummately tasteful, and quietly expert in each endeavor. A fabulously gifted guitarist, he consistently demurred self-promotion. He read more deeply and broadly than the rest of us—a true Renaissance Man, an anachronism these days. Were it not for his utter lack of narcissism, he could've been a penetrating music critic, a novelist, a studio session wizard. He shone, ever shunning the spotlight. What a beautiful human being, Matt Keane.

All of us docs know that there is a special bond, lifelong really, that you form with your intern class, particularly those of us that have made NOLA our home. There is something that you've shared and endured that others have not in quite the same way. Matt was a friend, a coworker, a brother, and always a soul to commiserate and commemorate this experience of life with. Sometimes snarky, often exasperated, sometimes incisive, often hysterical, and always kind. Our tiny crew is a family that will always be imprinted on my heart and in my mind. Even now, I still want to invite you to a Prince tribute at Tips or ask if you've seen a particular music documentary. It's just not the same without you brother. We love you and miss you dearly. —Joanne Deleon, Tulane Peds class of '06

Matthew and Elizabeth were big kid Gods to our toddler son. The whole family was salt-of-the-earth and the stories Bill would tell of visits to see him in New Orleans were touching and sometimes hilarious. He was one of the good ones.

I will always know him as Dr. Keane, who was so important to have ushered me through residency. Every hour of the day he was available, from 2am hospital admissions where he had to so patiently listen, to daytime rounds. He was kind, patient and so very knowledgeable, and I could not have asked for a better teacher in medicine. The world is better because of him.

Oh Matthew! I remember you as an intern! You were such a hard worker and such a sweetheart! The world has benefited from your presence and will always be for the better because of your compassion and kindness.

To Matt's family. Matt was an excellent pediatric resident. I saw him go from a very earnest and hardworking resident to an amazing hospitalist. Matt always had a cup of coffee in his hand. He was like the energizer bunny, always on the go!! I cannot believe he is gone. We have lost a beautiful soul, my heartfelt condolences to his family. Although he is gone, he touched and impacted so many lives while alive. Thank you Matt for being you. I will miss you. Maggie
