Obituary for Mary Elizabeth (McPherson) Grout

Mary E. (McPherson) Grout, beloved wife of William Grout for 47 years, passed away on December 26, 2023, at the age of 68. She is survived by her adoring and devoted husband, William and their three children, Alyson Zukowski and her husband Michael, of Milton, Joanne Mylett, of Dorchester, and William Grout and his wife Shioban, of Abington. Mary was a beloved grandmother to her seven grandchildren, Ryan, Emily, and Michael Zukowski, Michael and Matthew Mylett, and Rose and Joy Grout. Devoted daughter of the late John and Ethel (Tobin) McPherson, of Dorchester. Loving sister of John (Jack) McPherson and his wife, Oz, of Punta Gorda, Florida, William (Bill) McPherson and his wife, Louise, of Abington, Robert (Bob) McPherson and his wife, Judy, of Ashland, NH, the late Patricia McInnis and her late husband James, Joanne Dooley and her late husband, James, of Dorchester, the late Michael McPherson, Theresa Burnley and her husband Christopher, of Amherst, NH, Kathleen Stern and her husband Allan, of Sharon, MA, and Christine Donovan and her husband Michael, of Newburyport, MA. Cherished aunt to many nieces and nephews. Loyal and caring friend to countless others.

Born on March 18, 1955, in Boston, Massachusetts, Mary lived a life rich in love and compassion. She grew up and raised her family in the neighborhoods of Dorchester where she lived until she retired to Middleboro, Massachusetts, with her husband in 2015.

Mary was a loving wife, celebrating 47 years of marriage with her devoted husband, Bill, this past August. For fifty three years they walked side by side, nurturing and supporting one another. It was the simple things, like their shared love of music, watching sports, hanging on the corner with friends and making regular visits to Pizzeria Regina that solidified their love. Their enduring partnership served as an inspiration to all who knew them, a testament to the strength of commitment and unwavering love.

As a dedicated mother of three, Mary poured her heart into nurturing and guiding her children, creating a home filled with warmth and laughter. Her presence so often extended beyond the home, as she eagerly embraced various roles in support of her children over the years. She was the coach on the field and the cheerleader in the stands. Lunch mother by day and BINGO worker by night. She was the troop leader, the tutor, the chaperone, the set designer. She was everything to her family.

Mary was a creative soul. As a young girl she was an active member of the St. Ann’s Band. She could often be found with her sketch book, wielding a paintbrush, or enjoying pottery classes. She was an avid reader, puzzle enthusiast, and a connoisseur of movies and TV shows. Her artistic pursuits reflected the depth of her creativity, while her love for literature and entertainment illuminated the diverse facets of her personality.

Mary battled courageously against a rare blood cancer and chronic myeloproliferative disorder for many years. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by family. Mary will be remembered for her boundless love, her dedication to family and friends, and the joy she found in the simple pleasures of life. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in peace.
