Mary McDonough (Swanson) 89, Of Milton MA, passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on August 14, 2026.

Mary was predeceased by her loving husband of 65 years Paul (“Mick”) and her eldest son Paul Francis.

Mary is survived by her children, Janice McDonough (Marianne), Karen McGrath (Alan), Joseph McDonough (Kellie), Brian McDonough (Shauna), and Kristen Phinney (Michael).

Mary had six grandchildren that were her greatest joy Jack, Sam, Lyla, Nolan, Maeve, and Cali.

Mary was born in Boston to Joseph and Anna Swanson on December 17, 1936. She was the third child of five. Mary was the first daughter. She was predeceased by her brothers Eddie and Joey, and her sister, Karen. She is survived by her youngest sister Jan Lucey (Jack). Her sisters were her best friends throughout her life.

During her youth in Dorchester, Mary developed a deep connection to her faith, a great love of family and a strong sense of tradition. Mary attended and graduated from the Dorchester High School for Girls. In her high school years she met the love of her life at 16 years old- Paul. After graduating Mary worked for New England Telephone Company.

They were married in 1958 and began an amazing life together. They were dedicated members of Saint Agatha Parish and participated in many clubs and events together. Mary integrated her passion and dedication to helping others in a variety of different activities and clubs. She was a founding member of the Saint Agatha Respect Life Committee. Mary and Paul hosted an annual baby shower to provide assistance to mothers and infants in need. Mary led this effort in conjunction with the youth of the parish -confirmation students and Boy Scout troops. She was determined to show the younger generations how important it was to give back to those in need.

Mary raised thousands of dollars and innumerable donations of baby products, homemade blankets, quilts, etc., for young mothers in need. Her commitment to this quietly touched women and infants often forgotten. In true Mary fashion she was fierce- yet subtle.

Mary enjoyed mass every morning, book clubs with friends, and decorating her house interior monthly to celebrate each season or holiday.

Mary was a devoted mother, aunt, grandmother and friend. Family and faith were everything to Mary. She was an avid fan at all of her children and grandchildren’s sporting events. She discreetly went out of her way to help anyone. Mary will be remembered for bringing her faith and love to everyone around her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Agatha Church, 432 Adams Street, Milton, Tuesday, August 18 at 10:30 AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hour at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON SQUARE prior to the Mass from 9 – 10 AM. Interment in Milton Cemetery.
