Obituary for Martin "Marty" J. McCarthy, Jr.

Martin J. “Marty” McCarthy, Jr., 70, of Quincy, MA (formerly of South Boston), passed away surrounded by his wife and daughters after a long, courageous fight against Huntington’s Disease (HD) on February 6, 2024. Despite his illness, he was determined to live a full, fun, and rewarding life, and he certainly accomplished his goal.

Born in South Boston, MA to Martin J. & Susan T. (Milne) McCarthy, Marty made them very proud with all his accomplishments, whether as an altar boy at Gate of Heaven Church, a star athlete in baseball and basketball, a supportive volunteer coach to many young men who became lifelong friends, a US Army Reservist for 26 years—retiring as an Inspector General E8 (TOP), a NE Telephone Company employee for 30 years, and a graduate of Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy.

After early retirement from Verizon, he accepted his dream job of working for the Boston Red Sox in 2004 as a Greeter. He loved working there for 11 years and witnessed 3 World Series wins. Some would say he was the good luck charm for the team...

Marty and his wife volunteered for several rewarding years after retirement at My Brother’s Keeper in Brockton, MA.

Once diagnosed with HD, he became a major fundraiser for the NE Chapter of HDSA by conducting several “Party at the Park” events at Fenway with the help of his loving wife, family, and many friends. These events were also dubbed “Marty’s Party”.

Survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, Kathy Hackett, loving daughters Kathleen Shepherd and her husband Matt of Hampstead, NH and Christine Remlinger and her husband Kurt of Pembroke, MA, and 4 cherished grandchildren: Veronica and Paul Remlinger, Charlie and Grace Shepherd. Loyal brother of Susan Bodnar and her husband Igi of South Boston, Terry Joyce and her husband Jack of New London, NH, Barbara George of Tewksbury, MA, and Michele Twombly and her late husband Peter of N. Attleboro, MA.

Also survived by his Aunt Catherine Judge of Nashua, NH, many special nieces, nephews, cousins, countless friends, and his former wife Kathleen Berry of Quincy, MA. Preceded in death by his sister, Mary McCarthy, his niece Marianne Twombly, and his in-laws, Bob and Charlotte Hackett. The family appreciates the support of hospice caregivers for the last 4 years, especially CNA friend Max DesRosiers.

Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, February 12th at Gate of Heaven Church, 615 E 4th St., SOUTH BOSTON at 10:00 am. Interment in Blue Hill Cemetery, BRAINTREE. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday, February 11th at the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Ave., EAST MILTON SQUARE from 1:00 – 5:00 pm.

I will keep fond memories of Marty for the rest of my life. We collected the 2&5 cent tonic bottle empties from the South Boston High School football team after their practice and turned them in at Louie's Variety. We played ball in St. Peter's school yard and The Barnie with our friends from I&6th street. Marty was an awesome Foxie player as he was "FAST"! Sledding at the Orchie one of his favorite activities. I couldn't thank Marty enough for sharing in these experiences with me because he was fun to be with. My thoughts are with Marty's family.

There will never be another one like you, Marty. Too many memories to put here, but you've lit up every life you've encountered and every room you've ever been in. I was & am proud to call you my father in law. Nights hanging out at Mals, dinners at the Marriott, seeing you at the Sox games, coming by Wynot, parties and holidays, all the HD benefits, will always stick with me. Thank you for being a great father, husband, friend, and grandfather. The kids miss you so much already. Please look over all of us and join in any fun you see fit. 🙂 I hope you're having a BL right now with all your family and friends. You'll always be Marvelous Martin McCarthy to me. You made us all see the true meaning of the word FIGHTER. Love you, Kurt
