Obituary for Leslie A. Layne
Leslie Arlington Layne was born in Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines on September 16,1948 to Caroline Stapleton and Garnet Edwards. Leslie had many nicknames but most people knew him as Dick or Eaters. Leslie worked for Geest Banana Shippers when he finished his education. In 1972 he migrated to the U.S. until his death, Dick loved to party, DJ, jump up for carnival and J’ouvert, play football, and he cherished spending time with his family and friends.
Playing football (soccer) was his true passion he never missed an opportunity to flex his skills. Leslie even coached the Antiliens and Stingers Football Clubs in Brooklyn. On weekends he would watch his favorite football club, Manchester United F.C. The Cowboys was his favorite football team and he was a die hard Knicks fan. He loved all sports and was a natural athlete.
Eaters would go to St. Vincent, Trinidad & Tobago, Toronto etc. for carnival and jump up with his brothers Tunka and Monty where they would fete for days and create countless memories. Deejaying was also a huge passion of his. He loved to dance and show off his skills on the dance floor. If football was his passion, then music was his true love. His impressive music collection was something you couldn’t miss when you were at his place, especially his Al green records.
New York’s Labor day weekend was always a party at his apartment on Watkins Street in Brooklyn. His daughter, grandson, and in-laws never missed a Labor Day Weekend during his time there. Although the apartment was crowded it never bothered him because he was surrounded by loved ones especially his late friend ‘Salo’ who travelled down every labor day weekend from Montreal.
Leslie is survived by his Two Children: Tanisha and Kadeem; Grandchildren: Malik and Asad; Siblings: Arthur, Percival (Monty), Catherine “Baby Soul” (deceased), Annette, Garth, Roger “Ted”, Arlett, Gary “Tunka”, Debbie, Sirlancelot “Lance”, Geoffrey, Trevor and Merlene. He also left behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and a plethora of friends/acquaintances that loved him dearly.
He was a very special grandson, son, father, brother, nephew and friend. Leslie will always be remembered as a caring thoughtful, fun person. We take this time to honor and praise him.
