Kenneth Michael Varnum Sr, 88, formerly of Milton, MA, went home to be with the Lord on May 19th, 2022. Beloved husband of almost 55 years to the late Carol V (Dineen) Varnum. He was the devoted father to Judith (Varnum) Wall of Attleboro, MA and her family, Kenneth Varnum, Jr and his wife Vicky of Stoughton, MA and their family, Michelle (Varnum) Parks of Canton, MI and her family and Jennifer (Varnum) Scott of Pawtucket, RI, and her family. He was also a well-loved grandfather of twelve and a new great-grandfather of one.
Ken was the son of the late Robert and Margaret (Fleming) Varnum and grew up in Brookline, MA. He was a graduate of Brookline High School class of 1952 and Coyne Electric trade school, where he trained to be an electrician. He then served in the army as a Radio Operator from 1956 to 1958. After serving in the army, he then began his career 40+ year career as an electrician working for the Town of Brookline from where he retired in January of 2003.
Ken was a performer at heart and loved to make people laugh with a joke or story. In his younger days, he performed locally for 30+ years with the vaudeville group The Cherry Brothers, performing on cruises and clubs like the Beachcomber in Quincy and many others around New England. Entertaining was one of the highlights of his life and for many years after he stopped performing with The Cherry Brothers, he still regaled family and friends with his stories of “the good old days”.
As a faithful parishioner for 45+ years of St. Agatha Parish in Milton, Ken served the church in many capacities including one as the co-founders and leaders of the youth group, 10Up, where he helped high school students in grades 10-12 grow in their Catholic faith through life lessons and community service. Ken also served as a eucharistic minister, a money counter and was part of the Building committee.
As a longtime resident of Milton, over the years, he served his community by volunteering with the Town of Milton Youth Department, coaching girls’ softball, and after retirement, volunteering at Milton Hospital as a Greeter, where he found great pleasure in having a new audience in which to tell his many jokes!
Ken was the brother to the late Robert Varnum of Foxboro, MA and Janice Varnum of Punta Gorda, FL. He is survived by his loving brothers, Paul Varnum and his wife Catherine, of Norton, MA and Gerald Varnum and his wife, Nancy, of Foxboro, MA as well as his devoted sister Marilyn Varnum of Marshfield, MA, Ken is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
