Obituary for Katie Griffin

Katie Mae (Flowers) Griffin passed away on Thursday, April 29, 2021.

Katie was born in Newark, NJ on August 11, 1946 to the late Newt and Hazel Flowers. In school, she enjoyed accounting and sewing. She graduated in 1967 from Central High School in Newark NJ. One day a neighbor invited her to a cookout, it was there she met the love of her life Sammie Griffin. In 1969 Katie decided to move to Boston. Two years later she and Sammie were married.

In 1972, they welcomed a beautiful baby girl Teeana Pekai Griffin. Katie stayed home until Teeana turned a year old, before accepting a job as a supervisor of the billing dept. at Beth Israel Hospital’s Libby building. After a few years, she was promoted to manager which she remained for a total 27 years. In 2014, Katie retired from Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare as a senior auditor to take care of her ailing husband. She loved her jobs and all the people she met throughout her career. She stayed connected with countless former employees and often would spend time reminiscing about the old days. Katie had a big heart and loved hard, she was gentle and selfless, genuine, and was always very encouraging and kept a positive attitude about life. If you ever had the privilege to meet Katie, and had a conversation with her, she would often offer you her advice to help you get through whatever it was you were dealing with at the time.

Katie and Sam were both members of the Prince Hall family. She was an active member of Mt. Zion Chapter 21. The order of the Eastern Stars and the Daughter of ISIS. Katie loved working with the youth and sat on the board as the organizer of the teen scholarship program with the Shriners. Katie loved putting on fashion shows and helping with fund – raising events. She enjoyed working with the young ladies to instill a sense of self-love as well as teaching them how to have respect for themselves. Katie and Sam loved to travel, and they looked forward to the Imperial Shriner’s convention every year. They truly complemented each other with their fancy style of dress. Katie was very stylish and had a keen sense for fashion. They also loved going to the casino, anytime Ora and Charlie Green said let’s go! They would be dressed in 5 minutes time.

Katie abruptly succumbed to her illness on April 29, 2021. She joins her parents, Hazel and Newt Flowers, her sisters, Marietta Hall, Magnolia Johnson, Johnnie Mae Clark, and brothers, Leon Flowers, James Flowers, and Calvin Flowers.
