Obituary for Joseph P. Callahan
CALLAHAN – Joseph P. “Joe”, age 95 of Georgia formerly of Milton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
Beloved husband of the late Teresa M. “Terry” (O'Farrell) Callahan.
Joseph was preceded in death by siblings Francis, Rita, Paul, Robert, and Irene, and by granddaughter (Ted) Angela.
Devoted father of Francis “Frank” Callahan and his wife Alison “Danielle” of Georgia, Edward “Ted” Callahan and his late wife Kitty of Georgia, and Thomas “Tom” Callahan and his wife Pamela of Indiana.
Cherished grandfather of Dillon Hanners, Joseph and Robert Callahan, all of Georgia, and Cate Callahan of Indiana.
Cherished great-grandfather of Mason and Ashlyn Hanners of Georgia.
Joseph was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in West Quincy and East Milton, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1951, and served his country honorably overseas in Bremerhaven, Germany for over 3 years. He obtained his Bachelor of Science from Boston College in 1963, and spent his career in finance and business administration.
While working for the United Fruit Company, he had the opportunity to take an overseas assignment in Bermuda. There he met the love of his life, Terry. They married on June 30th, 1973, in Bermuda. His love and sense of duty to Terry were eclipsed only by his faith.
They moved back to Milton, and raised their family in the home he grew up in. Although not an avid sportsman himself, he took his boys to Red Sox games any time the seats were available through his employer. He supported Terry’s love for gardening, and his boys’ interest in baseball, soccer, music, and Scouting.
He was passionate about classical music, with organ music being a particular interest. He sang in the St. Paul’s Men’s Schola in Cambridge during and after Tom’s attendance at St. Paul’s Choir School. He later joined the choir at St. Agatha’s. He donated much of his efforts in retirement to being a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels.
He moved to Georgia in 2021 to spend his final years close to Frank and Ted. He enjoyed Sunday dinner surrounded by family most weeks, a tradition that he had enjoyed since childhood.
He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Agatha’s apart from his time in the Air Force, Bermuda, and Georgia.
