Obituary for Joseph P. Callahan

CALLAHAN – Joseph P. “Joe”, age 95 of Georgia formerly of Milton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.

Beloved husband of the late Teresa M. “Terry” (O'Farrell) Callahan.

Joseph was preceded in death by siblings Francis, Rita, Paul, Robert, and Irene, and by granddaughter (Ted) Angela.

Devoted father of Francis “Frank” Callahan and his wife Alison “Danielle” of Georgia, Edward “Ted” Callahan and his late wife Kitty of Georgia, and Thomas “Tom” Callahan and his wife Pamela of Indiana.

Cherished grandfather of Dillon Hanners, Joseph and Robert Callahan, all of Georgia, and Cate Callahan of Indiana.

Cherished great-grandfather of Mason and Ashlyn Hanners of Georgia.

Joseph was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in West Quincy and East Milton, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1951, and served his country honorably overseas in Bremerhaven, Germany for over 3 years. He obtained his Bachelor of Science from Boston College in 1963, and spent his career in finance and business administration.

While working for the United Fruit Company, he had the opportunity to take an overseas assignment in Bermuda. There he met the love of his life, Terry. They married on June 30th, 1973, in Bermuda. His love and sense of duty to Terry were eclipsed only by his faith.

They moved back to Milton, and raised their family in the home he grew up in. Although not an avid sportsman himself, he took his boys to Red Sox games any time the seats were available through his employer. He supported Terry’s love for gardening, and his boys’ interest in baseball, soccer, music, and Scouting.

He was passionate about classical music, with organ music being a particular interest. He sang in the St. Paul’s Men’s Schola in Cambridge during and after Tom’s attendance at St. Paul’s Choir School. He later joined the choir at St. Agatha’s. He donated much of his efforts in retirement to being a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels.

He moved to Georgia in 2021 to spend his final years close to Frank and Ted. He enjoyed Sunday dinner surrounded by family most weeks, a tradition that he had enjoyed since childhood.

He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Agatha’s apart from his time in the Air Force, Bermuda, and Georgia.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 28th at Saint Agatha Parish, 432 Adams St., MILTON at 10:30 am. Inurnment in Milton Cemetery, MILTON. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, March 27th at the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Ave., EAST MILTON SQUARE from 4:00 – 7:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Joseph may be made to Saint Paul’s Choir School, 29 Mt. Auburn St., Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138 ~ www.saintpaulschoirschool.us/giving

My old friend Joe. Blessed to have shared a cup of tea and a slice of pie with Joe and Rita in Milton ma. Such a part of the Saint Agatha choir and parish. Joe grew up with my Aunt Joan Buckley and they went back to Collicot school days. Joe was a man of God and an inspiration in my spiritual journey. I am sorry to have missed Joe's service on march 28th. I just heard the announcement at Sunday mass on the 29th. To his family, I miss Joe and Rita. Two of the nicest folks I've ever met. Rest peacefully Joe. Tom Buckley

To Joe's family, Im very sorry to learn of Joe passing away. I was a waitress years ago & Joe & Rita, & 2 other brothers would come into IHOP every Wednesday and Wed all have a great time & a lot of laughs. Rita was a talented singer & Joe was a devoted brother. I remember about 8 years ago my other was hospitalized at Milton hospital and who did I bump into going down the hallway? Joe! He was visiting sister Rita who was also hospitalized. So we then both visited her and then Joe was kind enough to come with me & visit my mom in her room. Joe was a wonderful person. Im so glad to have known him.even though I was like Pluto in his solar system..small & only saw him weekly for years, minor role in his life & yet he made an impact in my life. His kindness was apparent every time he entered a room. We lost a great one! Let the happy memories comfort all family & friends. With Deepest sympathy, Milton neighbor, Judy Levasseur
