Obituary for Joseph Leo Delaney III

Joseph Leo “Joe” Delaney III passed away peacefully on May 11th, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 76 years old.

Joe was born in Boston, MA, the son of Joseph L. Delaney Jr. and Patricia Beatty Delaney. He spent his childhood in Miami, FL, and attended Archbishop Curley High School there before moving to Westwood, MA, and graduating from Xaverian Brothers High School. Joe received a B.S. in History from Boston College and later attended graduate school at the Boston College School of Business.

Joe began his career in real estate brokerage in 1972 while associated with Beale & Co. in Milton, MA, and it became a lifelong passion for him. He loved working with people to achieve their housing goals or business locations and his interest in following the market, analyzing trends and predicting future developments led to his considerable expertise that spanned more than 50 years.

In 1979, Joe opened his own real estate brokerage business, Delaney and Co. Realtors of Milton, MA, and later added an associated office in Quincy, MA. In the early 1990s, Delaney Real Estate merged with Coldwell Banker, and Joe continued his career there, later joining ReMax and finally Keller Williams Boston Southwest, where he remained associated until his passing.

Over his career, Joe held several leadership positions in the industry, and he thoroughly enjoyed those activities. He was appointed President of the Greater Boston Real Estate Board in 1988, served as president of the Greater Boston Multiple Listing Service, and was appointed a committee chairman for the National Association of Realtors in 1990. Among his many local recognitions, he was selected as Realtor of the Year by the Tri-County Board of Realtors in 2003, and he remained active as an advisor and broker in several communities until the very end of his career.

Joe leaves behind his loving wife and best friend, Joanne St. Germain Delaney. They shared 52 wonderful years together, enjoying time with family and friends, traveling, and dining out with well-made Manhattans whenever possible. He also leaves his cherished children and their spouses: Liz Delaney and her husband Christian Lobo Rodriguez, Michael Delaney and his wife Kerri Lynch Delaney, and Joseph L. “Jay” Delaney IV. His grandchildren were the highlight of his life, and he loved spending time with them: Eva Lobo Delaney, Noemi Lobo Delaney, and Logan Lang.

Predeceased by his parents, Joe also leaves two sisters and brothers-in-law: Joanne Burke and her husband, Joe, of Newmarket, NH, and Mary Hennessey and her husband, Thomas, of Wellesley, MA; as well as his sister-in-law Jean Lake and her partner, Larry Gianakis. He also leaves many nieces and nephews, dear friends, and colleagues who loved him very much.

Joanne and family...Pat and I are deeply saddened by the news of Joe's passing...Joe was a longtime friend, colleague and an ally in troubled times...A personality and smile that would light up the night sky, he entertained friends, provided wisdom when needed, and was a very effective leader in his quiet way. He had a very successful tenure as President of the Greater Boston Real Estate Board, as well as many leadership positions with the Massachusetts Association Realtors. Joe, we will miss your humor, passion for life, and most importantly your friendship and loyalty. Joanne, our thoughts are with you and your family.

To Joe's family, I had the great pleasure of meeting with Joe every two weeks at our REN group at the chamber of commerce. Joe always had something informative to share with us about real estate, but where he really shined was when he talked about his wife and family. I will miss him and his stories. What a great guy! May God bless you, give you comfort and peace at this very sad time. -

Dear Joanne and family, It is with sadness that Joe has passed away. We think of him as one of the 'good guys' . He was always so nice to me when I worked with his wonderful Joanne. It was my pleasure to send Joanne home with cookies and almond cake for Joe, a bribe to keep Joanne with me at our work place. It worked for a while. The memories Joe leaves for your loving family will sustain you during your grief. "To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die" With our deepest sympathy, Tom and Anne O'Reilly

So sad now. Though I hadn't seen Joe in a few years I always thought of him laughing somewhere in the world. Making fun of life. Joe had a wonderful laugh or should I say giggle. He could tell a great story. Joe was a bright light in my and many others lives. Sorry for your loss. Love to you all from the Bosleys
