Obituary for Joseph L. Hanrahan

Joseph L. Hanrahan, of Fort Oglethorpe, GA, formerly of Dorchester, passed away Saturday April 18, 2026, after a period of failing health.

Joe was a devoted father to his son Ryan, (Tara) of GA. He is also survived by grandsons Michael and Matthew (Courtney) and great grandsons, Joseph and Dale as well as his siblings, Nancy Hourihan of Quincy and Kevin Hourihan (Vinette) of Plymouth, his nieces and nephews and numerous cousins and great friends, especially Ronnie Robinson and Gary Guy of GA. He was predeceased by his brother Dennis Hourihan (Joanne) of Marshfield in November, 2024.

Joe was born in Dorchester, MA on April 26, 1945 to Virginia (McViney) Hourihan and Joseph Hourihan. He was a graduate of Boston Technical High School and earned a basketball scholarship to Tyler College in Texas. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, before he was going to be drafted. Joe served his country with the First Marine Division in Chu Lai, Vietnam.

After his service was completed, he worked for Northeast Airlines in Boston, which merged with Delta Airlines. In 1972, he moved to the Atlanta area. After a successful career at Delta Airlines, he retired and moved north to the Ringgold and Ft. Oglethorpe areas, settling next to a major Civil War battlefield, Chickamauga. He loved everything about the South.

Joe was the perfect gentleman. Always very thoughtful, humble and kind. He often flew home to Boston to help take care of his ailing family. A quick phone call could turn into a two-hour chat. Joe loved to reminisce about his wonderful childhood in Codman Square, Dorchester and his many family vacations to Prince Edward Island, Canada.

We will miss Joe tremendously.

Joe was my manager at Delta in Equipment Control (Aircraft Routing) at the TOC. Wow, what a great guy he was, always armed with a fantastic sense of humor. Today, May 29th, I was incredibly surprised and deeply saddened to hear of the passing of such a wonderful person. I will always remember one particular time when he offered us comp time to stay over for an "IROP." Nobody was stepping up, and he was getting a bit upset. Finally, I spoke up and said I would stay, but there was just one problemโ€”Kroger wasn't accepting comp time for groceries! It broke the tension instantly, and we all had a phenomenal laugh in the department, Joe included. Thank you for the wonderful memories, Joe. Until we meet again. โ€” Tony "Gonzo" Gonzalez

Wow what a journey you had Joe. A life worth living. Always fearless, facing down the ragman's horse on Moultrie St. We really had fun. Requiescat Joe. Ken.
