John F. Shields (Jack) of Milton and Harwich, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2022, at the age of 81.
Beloved husband of Martha Wedgeworth Shields. Loving father of John Shields and Patricia of South Boston, Katherine Keohan and Sean of Milton, Sarah Rowley and Gerard of Milton and Julie McPhillips and Noel of Quincy, He also leaves 9 grandchildren, Sean and Liam Keohan, Ryan and Rory Shields, Aidan and Luke Rowley and Anna, Shane, and Tara McPhillips.
Jack was born in Dorchester to the late William and Mary (Downey) Shields. He was the brother of Joseph Shields of Walpole, the late Kathleen Lovett of Milton, Elizabeth Shea of Quincy, and William Shields of Woburn. He was the brother-in-law of William Lovett of Milton and Joan Shields of Woburn. He also leaves behind his extended family including many nieces and nephews.
Jack was raised in St. Marks parish where he lived with his large extended family. He attended St. Marks School where he sang in the choir and served as an altar boy. Jack excelled both academically and athletically earning himself scholarships to high school and college. Jack attended Boston College High School and Christopher Columbus. He continued to study and play football at Boston College Class of 1963. He earned a Masters Degree from Boston State College. Upon graduation he began his 37-year career in the Boston Public Schools where he served in various capacities retiring as Principal of the Dearborn Middle School in Roxbury. He found his passion working with the students in Boston. They were his priority and he impacted many lives teaching, coaching, and mentoring his students.
Jack retired to the Cape full time where he worked at the Captains Golf Course and had many fine rounds of golf during his retirement. He spent time traveling and was blessed with wonderful friends throughout his retirement. Jack will be greatly missed by all his many relatives, family, and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Agatha Church, 432 Adams Street, Milton, Thursday November 10 at 10:30 AM. Family and friends invited. Visiting hours at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON SQUARE, Wednesday, November 9 from 3-7 PM. Burial Milton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers contributions in Jack’s name may be sent to Alzheimer Association and Tommy’s Place.
