Joel Allen Costa Jr., affectionately known by many of his close friends as “TL,” was born on May 10, 1997, at Good Samaritan Hospital. Born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, Joel was a beloved son, brother, family member, and friend whose infectious personality and unforgettable laugh touched so many lives.

Joel attended Fenway High School, graduating on June 10, 2016. From a young age, he had a strong desire to work, be independent, and make his own money. While still in high school, Joel began his first job at Star Market. That hardworking and goal-oriented nature would remain a part of him throughout his life.

Joel went on to pursue automotive studies and training, where his passion for cars truly developed. Anyone who knew Joel knew just how much he loved cars. He enjoyed driving, racing, attending Punto car meetups, and simply being around others who shared his enthusiasm. But there was so much more to Joel than his love for cars.

Joel was silly, goofy, loving, caring, outgoing, and full of life. His laugh was one of a kind—you could hear it from a mile away. Although he had once been very shy, over the years he developed friendships that helped bring him out of his shell, allowing everyone around him to experience the funny and outgoing person he truly was. He had a heart of gold and was always looking out for the people he loved. He was hardworking, although those closest to him knew that lifting anything too heavy was another story. His family could even laugh about the time his own father fired him from a job. Those funny moments and stories are part of what made Joel simply Joel.

When he wasn’t working or enjoying cars, Joel loved traveling, especially vacationing in the Dominican Republic and Florida. He enjoyed going out to eat at Cathay Pacific in Quincy holding a special place as his favorite restaurant. He also enjoyed spending time at the gun range as a licensed gun owner and took pride in his collection.

Joel was the beloved son of Arrian Smith and Joel Allen Costa Sr., and the cherished godson of Antoinette Perry. He was the loving brother of LaToya Carney, who preceded him in death; Alexis Smith; Ciarra Lightbourne; Shareese Costa Dancy; Shacara Telemarque; Brandon Matthews; Justin Moore; Joseph Costa of California; Keith Turner Jr.; and Xzavian Turner. Joel also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and loved ones who were an important part of his life.

More than anything, Joel will be remembered for the way he made people feel. He loved deeply, cared about those around him, worked hard for the things he wanted, and could make people laugh simply by being himself.

On August 20, 2026, Joel’s life came to an end far too soon at just 29 years old. Although his time here was much shorter than those who loved him ever could have imagined, the impact he made cannot be measured by years.

His family and friends will carry with them countless memories—the sound of his unmistakable laugh, his jokes and goofy personality, the cars he loved, the trips he enjoyed, the goals he worked toward, and, most importantly, the love and loyalty he showed to those fortunate enough to be part of his life.

Joel’s presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will continue to live on through his family, his friends, and every story that begins with:
