With great sadness we announce the passing of Jean Michel Thenyson Ligonde proudly known as “Maitre Jean” who departed this life on January 26, 2026, at the age of 100 years old, in Hyde Park, Massachusetts. He was born October 15, 1925, in Jean - Rabel northwest Haiti.

Jean was the son of the late Thenyson Ligonde, and Louisa Auguste Ligonde. Jean attended elementary school in Port-de-paix (Freres insitutiom Chretienne) After 8th grade, Jean went to Port-au-Prince to attend high school (Petit Seminar college saint martial). After high school his father passed away, so Jean decided to quit his college education and help his mother with his other siblings. At the time there was a job fair for teachers in his hometown, he sat for the exam and passed and from there started his first career as a teacher. While he was a teacher, he took training at IPN (institut Pedagogique National) in Haiti. From there he went to Paris to obtain a higher degree in education. After his time in Paris, Jean returned to Haiti. From there he climbed his way to the top from being a teacher to principal and lastly a superintendent. From there he became a school board chair, after years spent in education, he was appointed to be a Depute of Jean-Rabel (Haiti). In 1986 he departed Haiti to Canada for a bit. From there in 1989 he immigrated to the United States, spent some time with his sister in New York and ended his voyage in Boston, Massachusetts.

Jean was a proud beloved member of St. Angela Mercici Church in Mattapan with over 20 years with Father Morin, Father Gabriel and Father Miracle. After his long-devoted dedication with St Angela, Jean decided to retire from the Church. Jean was a beloved father, brother, grandfather and uncle and cousin. He touched the lives of many individuals, from his big loving family to his students in Haiti and his congregation at St. Angela in Boston. Jean’s legacy lives on through the lives he touched, and he will be missed immensely. Jean is predeceased by his daughter Magalie Ligonde, his son Gregory Ligonde. His wife Irene Poitvien Ligonde. His Brothers Ralph Ligonde and Gerard Ligonde and the late Anne- Marie Ligonde Jean Mary. He is survived by his devoted children Marie Hermithe Gerarda Elizabeth Ligonde Jean and her husband Watson Jean, Arcel Edouard Vladimir Ligonde, and his wife Sheila Ligonde. Loving sisters Christine Ligonde, Andree Theronier Ligonde, and her late husband Fritz Theronier, and Gisele Ligonde. Sisters in Law Islande Dalger Ligonde., Germanie Poitevien Plancher, Renee Poitevien Najac. Beloved grandchildren Jonathan Joel August, Randy Vladimir Jean, Marvin Gerado Jean, Brian Gregory Jean, Trisha Elizabeth Jean, Christopher Ligonde, Archelle Irene Ligonde, Christian Ligonde and Conrad Ligonde. Jean is also the precious uncle of many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 21, in St. Angela Church, (Our Lady of Mt. Carmel), 1540 Blue Hill Avenue, Mattapan, MA at 10 o’clock.

Visiting Hours, Friday, February 20, 2026, in the Dolan Funeral Home, 1140 Washington Street, DORCHESTER LOWER MILLS, 5-8pm. Interment Private.
