Obituary for Gertrude W. Shaw

On April 26, 2022 Mrs. Gertrude W. Shaw of Boston, MA transitioned from this life and the legacy that she desired to leave was one of educational support for those who others may “count out.”

A survivor of the Jim Crow South, the great granddaughter of an American born enslaved great grandfather and the daughter of an Alabama sharecropper. She was amazed at how her own father who was denied education past the 3rd grade navigated and fought for his place in a world that struggled to see his value as a human being. She remained committed to achieving the educational access and success that she, her husband James, and generations before them were denied.

In celebration of her life the “Don’t Count Me Out Scholarship” has been established through the Gertie Pie Foundation. In lieu of flowers, join us in honoring Gertie Pie’s legacy by donating a tax deductible gift here: https://nebip.app.neoncrm.com/forms/gerti-pie-foundation 100% of these funds support that endeavor “I want to celebrate those kids that don’t give up on themselves even when the people around them do…they need to know not to count themselves out.”

Visiting Hour on Wednesday 9-10 AM in Bethel AME Church, 40 Walk Hill Street, Jamaica Plain. Funeral Service will follow at 10 AM. Interment in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Boston.
