Gertrude M. “Gertie” (Binda) Whelan, 99, of Braintree and OFD. November 9, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family.

Wife of the late Thomas J Whelan, Mother of Lois Whelan of Plymouth, Trudy Whelan of East Dennis, Ann Marie Nathan and her husband John of Pembroke, Patricia Spaulding and her husband Billy of Lake Worth, FL, Mary Pistorino and her husband Jack of Taunton, Paul Whelan and his wife Joanne of Hanover, Lynne Whelan of Braintree, Judy Scales “adopted” daughter of Galway, Ireland and the late Thomas J Whelan Jr. Loving Nana of 12 Grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Gertie enjoyed a long happy life of 99 years with her large family and many friends. Born in Cambridge, she grew up in Dorchester and raised her family in Saint Marks parish for close to 60 years before moving to Braintree. Gertie worked at General Radio assembling parts for the war during World War II. She married her husband Tom and raised eight children as her full-time job. Gertie’s interests over the years included roller skating, bowling, bingo, and traveling to many parts of the world. She recently enjoyed activities and excursions with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, doing jigsaw puzzles, watching game shows and taking occasional gambling trips. She was an avid reader, especially books by her favorite author Danielle Steele.

She is loved by so many and will be dearly missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Gate of Heaven Church, 615 E 4th St, South Boston, Thursday November 16 at 11:00 AM. Family and friends invited. Visiting hours at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON SQUARE, Wednesday November 15 from 4-7 PM. Burial Cedar Grove Cemetery.
