Obituary for George W. Evans III

Beloved son of the late George W. Evans, Jr. and Cynthia L. Brooks and beloved stepson of the late Raymond W. Brooks. Survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Kathleen A. (Collins) Evans; his children Keith R. Evans, Hilary A. Evans and her husband Christopher K. Lowman, Bronwen C. Evans and her partner Christian J. Tiongson; his grandchildren Sarah E. Evans and Timothy J. Evans and their mother Pamela; his brothers-in-law Michael (Mary) R. Collins and Daniel (Ellen) O. Collins and sister-in-law Irene (George) A. Hawley (โ€œGretchieโ€); his much loved nieces and nephews; the Mclaughlins; and many good friends near and far. He is predeceased by his dear sister-in-law Anne F. (Collins) Walsh (โ€œTuffyโ€).

George (โ€œSkippy,โ€ โ€œSkip,โ€ โ€œStibbsโ€) was born at St. Margaretโ€™s hospital in Dorchester, Massachusetts. His father passed when George was four months old, and his mother subsequently married Raymond Brooks. Raised in the quiet Clam Point neighborhood of Dorchester, George loved to shoot tennis balls with a hockey stick for his dog DeeDee to catch and to play stickball with his childhood best friends in the dead end on his street.

He graduated from Boston English High School in 1963 and afterward joined the United States Navy, serving in the reserves and in active duty. Upon his Honorable Discharge, he began his decades-long career in banking, briefly working as a Preloader at the United Postal Service before his retirement in 2008. He was rightly proud of his time in the Navy and reflected this in his home, which is dripping with Navy memorabilia. He was devoted to his church and served on the Vestry as a member from 1968 to 1993, Clerk from 1973 to 1974, Junior Warden from 1982 to 1983, and Senior Warden from 1984 to 1993, roles he very much loved and in which he thrived.

After George and Kathy married and started their family in 1970, they moved to Savin Hill. His warm and silly personality made him a great player; he loved playing with his kids and being involved in their activities. He taught them how to fly kites, shoot hoops, and ride their bicycles. He played catch with them in his parentsโ€™ backyard and tossed apples from their trees over the back fence with Keith. The two would also attend Harvard hockey games together, even in the bitter cold. He co-coached Hilaryโ€™s softball team and always wanted to hear her stories about the children in her professional care. He took several albumsโ€™ worth of pictures at Bronwenโ€™s riding lessons, and when his grandkids came along, he looked forward to soccer games and track practice every week or weekend. He dressed up for Sarahโ€™s dance recitals and bundled up for Timothyโ€™s hockey games.

George had a fervent affinity for college and professional sports. His love of boxing was ignited in the Navy and resulted in a substantial collection of Ring and other boxing magazines. He kept meticulous records of his favorite teams for years and transferred his skill and passion to his detailed record-keeping of Bronwenโ€™s equestrian competitions. University of Kentucky and UConn women's basketball, Harvard, the Chicago Cubs, LA Dodgers, Dallas Cowboys (he was a huge fan of Roger Staubach), Baltimore Orioles and Ravens, Tottenham Hotspurs, and of course the Navy were among his favorite teams. Rugby, Cricket, and Formula One racing in part reflected the breadth of his interests. Swimming was one of his favorite Olympic sports. Though not competitive himself, he enjoyed swimming and often walked with his neighbor and good friend Alf across Morrissey Boulevard to take advantage of the swimming pool at UMass Boston.

George was also a huge history buff. A walking encyclopedia, he could answer any sports questions and discuss almost any topic in U.S. History at length. He also demonstrated a very pointed interest in Indigenous Peoples, soaking up all the information he could. He loved books, magazines, media guides, newspapers (for a period of time, he would even meet with a friend in the Blue Hills every few months for coffee and a newspaper exchange), and trips to his favorite bookstores. He loved all things Welsh and was sure to wish everyone โ€œDydd Gwyl Dewi Hapusโ€ โ€“ โ€œHappy St. Davidโ€™s Dayโ€ โ€“ on the first of March.

George ran on Dunkinโ€™ (always a hot medium with three creams and five sugars), The Boston Globe, and music โ€“ especially Johnny Mathis (a love he shared with Kathy) and his recent new favorite, Gregory Alan Isakov. He had a beautiful, sonorous voice and would spontaneously burst into song and leave his family hanging on only one line or verse, never a complete song.

He cherished his pets, to whom he assigned creative names or nicknames (many less eccentric than those he lovingly gave his kids) โ€“ Knick and Knack, DD710 (โ€œDeeDeeโ€), Tia (โ€œTia Tippin Tobin Atwellโ€), Emmaline (โ€œEmmyโ€ or โ€œEmmaline Tochinskyโ€), Cricket (โ€œCricket Madagascanโ€), and Sebastian Bach โ€“ and by all of whom he is predeceased. He was deeply fond of Nutmeg, the newest addition to the family. โ€œWhereโ€™s the kitty?โ€ he would frequently ask. Sheโ€™s safe and sound, George. We promise. And we hope you are, too. We hope that you feel our unconditional love and find unquantifiable and unending happiness, comfort, and peace wherever your soul may rest.

Georgeโ€™s family would like to extend our sincerest and deepest gratitude to Georgeโ€™s medical team; to the emergency responders and hospital staff for their prompt, compassionate, expert care; and to our neighbors, friends, and close ones for their love and support.

I recognized George's picture right away. We were shipmates in 1966 aboard the USS Gearing DD710, deck division. We were called deck apes. Sorry for your loss. Smooth Sailing, George. Steve Connolly

How do you share a lifetime of memories? Just looking at his picture in his sailor suit transports me back 50 years! Skip, his Mom Cynthia, Kathy and kids are all a part of the "St. Mary's Family", although a "loosely knit" group, the ties are still there. Just thinking back on all that we did, from the "Tom Thumb Wedding" to the Pageants, various Strawberry Festivals, Summer Picnics, and shared in the birth of many children. I am so glad that I got to know him and all of the family. Such Beautiful Memories!
