Obituary for George Boone Hungerford, Jr.

George Boone Hungerford Jr. died unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, three days short of his 80th birthday.

He was born in Chicago, IL on December 14, 1944 to George Boone Hungerford Sr. and Marjorie Ellen Frank Hungerford and spent his early years in Chicago before the family moved to Saugatuck, MI. George graduated from Hope College in Holland, Michigan in 1967 majoring in English and Chemistry. During his long and varied career, George worked for the Newcastle Breweries as a chemist in Scotland, for the Massachusetts Department of Revenue, for the Harvard Coop, and for many years as an analyst at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts.

George was an enthusiastic traveler, hiker, bird watcher and reader with a keen interest in classical Latin works and church history. As a hobby, over the years he taught himself a number of languages including Scottish Gaelic, French, German, Italian, and Swedish, and had a reading knowledge of Chinese, Syriac, and Greek. He was a long time and faithful member of the Church of the Advent in Boston.

George met his wife of 29 years, Sarah Herrick Hungerford, while both were working at the Harvard Coop and together they enjoyed hiking in the White Mountains and Adirondacks, exploring towns in northern New England and upstate New York, and trips to Italy, where they spent time in both the modern and historical sections of Rome and particularly enjoyed searching out the city’s paleo christian churches.

George is survived by his wife, Sarah Hungerford, his brother Daniel Hungerford, his sister-in-law Cynthia Winters, and several cousins. His younger brother, Richard Hungerford predeceased him.

A Requiem Mass will be held at the Church of the Advent, 30 Brimmer Street, Boston at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, December 18th.

Interment Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.

Sarah, I am so sorry for your loss. I met George only twice as he waived goodbye to you as went off to work and another as you began a walk. I was grateful to know you both enjoyed life in the larches our childhood playground. With sincere sympathy, may he rest in peace.
