Obituary for Geoffrey C. Goodale

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Geoffrey C. Goodale of Braintree, Massachusetts on October 3, 2025, at the age of 81. A devoted educator, colleague, and community member, Geoff died peacefully surrounded by family. He is leaving behind a legacy of compassion, intellect, and service to his students and peers.

Son of the late Charles F. Goodale and Anne E. Goodale, Geoff was born in Boston, MA and grew up in Milton, MA. He was predeceased by his brother, Peter Goodale.

Geoff graduated from Thayer Academy in 1962, where he formed lifelong friendships and developed a passion for literature, learning, and wrestling. He went on to Brown University, where he studied English and was a proud member of the wrestling team.

A lifelong scholar, Geoff went on to earn his Ph.D. in English from Boston University, where he devoted his studies to the works of William Shakespeare. Guided by passion and purpose, Geoff transformed his love of learning into a long and meaningful career in education.

After completing his studies, Geoff taught at various Boston area colleges from 1967–2004. Additionally, in 1981, Geoff returned to his beloved Thayer as an English teacher and continued his mission to guide young minds with patience, insights, and kindness. During his career at Thayer that spanned over 30 years, Geoff served as acting head of the English Department, Secretary to the Cum Laude Society, and advisor to the Black and Orange, Thayer’s yearbook. He coached all levels of the wrestling program including middle school and served as a JV tennis coach. In recognition of his devotion to his alma mater, Geoff received the Thayer Alumni Loyalty Award in 2017 as a celebrated alumnus and in February of 2025 had a classroom on campus dedicated to him.

In 1965, Geoff married the love of his life, Prudence (Buckley) Goodale. Together for 60 years, they built a life rich in love, partnership, and purpose. They raised three sons – Geoffrey (wife Julie), Nathaniel, and Douglas (wife Sarah). Geoff was also a devoted and playful grandfather to Ryan, Alexandra, Eleanor, and Blaise, with whom he shared endless hours of storytelling, kayaking, treasure hunts, and joy.

Geoff loved life and embraced it with energy and joy. He spent countless hours on the water in his many kayaks, often winning the senior divisions of local races. An avid tennis player, he could be found on the courts, first challenging his children and later his grandchildren to spirited matches. He delighted in simple pleasures – taking walks in the park, riding bikes, and creating elaborate treasure hunts for his grandchildren – memories that will be cherished for generations.

Visitation will be at the Dolan Funeral Home at 460 Granite Avenue in Milton, MA on October 24, 2025 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. EDT followed immediately by a memorial service beginning at 10:30 a.m. EDT. Interment will take place at Milton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations in Geoff’s name to be made to the Thayer Academy Annual Fund by visiting https://www.thayer.org/supporting-thayer/give-now

Dear Prudence & boys, My brother, Bill, and I would like to express our heartfelt condolences for the loss of your husband and father. (He was the cousin of our father, William L.Griffin.) We enjoyed a short but delightful relationship with Geoffrey in the year prior to his departure. Bill and I began speaking with Geoffrey as we have been exploring Goodall genealogy. We had lively discussions of his memories growing up "Goodale" via phone and text. Btw, our father grew up in the Ashland house with Buddy. Buddy was a much-loved father-figure to our Dad. Bill, my brother, clearly remembers meeting Buddy on several occasions with our father. All these treasured Goodale memories mean so much up us. Geoffrey's warmth, humor, and openness to our contact made us feel welcome in the Goodall Clan. We are honored to have come to know Geoffrey and will miss our communications with him. We would welcome continued contact with any of Geoffrey's family should any be interested in exploring Goodall genealogy with us. (Dialog0220@gmail.com). In closing, we hold all our communications with Geoffrey close to our hearts and continue to pray for you all in your time of loss.

I had the pleasure of being a student of Professor Goodale at UMass Boston many years ago. He encouraged me and brought out the best in my writing and the other students as well. Professor Goodale was a kind and sensitive person and an excellent teacher.
