Obituary for Genevieve A. Bertoni

Genevieve Anne (Corcoran) Bertoni, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother died Thursday, September 19, 2024, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was the beloved wife of the late Eugene A. Bertoni of Quincy for 53 years, and mother of Christine Flanagan of Acton, ME, Kim and Dennis Wright of Murphy, NC, and Mark and Debbi Bertoni of Carver, MA. She is also survived by six loving grandchildren and twelve beloved great-grandchildren. She was the daughter of Jerome and Adeline (Gaudiano) Corcoran of Quincy, the loving sister of Julia McAuliffe of Quincy, William Corcoran of Braintree, and John F. Corcoran of Hyannis. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Bertoni was born and raised in West Quincy. She was part of the former Saint Mary’s School’s first graduating class and graduated from Quincy High School in 1946. She continued her education at Quincy Junior College.

Mrs. Bertoni was a Eucharistic minister and lifelong communicant at St. Mary’s Church in West Quincy. She brought Holy Communion to several home-bound parish members and was also a member of Saint Mary’s Seniors.

Mrs. Bertoni was employed by the Quincy School Department as secretary at the former Pollard School, from 1964 to 1980. She became a secretary to Curriculum Coordinators in the administrative offices of the Quincy Public Schools, transferring to Quincy Junior College as secretary to the Dean of Academic Affairs, the Vice President, and later to the President. After retiring from the educational system, she entered private industry as an executive secretary until her final retirement in June 1993.

Mrs. Bertoni enjoyed golfing, gardening, reading, and knitting, and in years past was an avid skier with her husband and family in their home in Vermont. In her retirement, she volunteered at the Thos. Crane Public Library. She, also, participated in the Quincy Senior Olympics for several years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Divine Mercy Parish in Saint Mary’s Church, 95 Crescent Street, West Quincy, on Wednesday, September 25, at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting Hours will be held at the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, East Milton, on Tuesday, September 24, from 4 – 7 p.m. Interment Saint Mary’s Cemetery, West Quincy.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Genevieve’s memory may be made to Saint Mary’s Church, c/o 386 Hancock Street, Quincy, MA 02171.

    Genevieve was my big sister. I was her little "Bruddy", and that's where I got my nickname, "Buddy". Gen was 360 days older than I, and for a period of 5 days every October, therefore, we were the same age. We were known, of course, as "The Irish Twins". In my earliest years Gen would hold my hand wherever I was required to go. She was my guardian. My protector. My teacher. She was "Miss Perfect". She was in the fourth (not the first) graduating class of St. Mary's School in West Quincy, and I remember well each Sister of St. Joseph, almost shouting at me, "Why can't you be like Genevieve!!" Well, it just wasn't possible. She was in a class by herself. As an example, at the age of 17, when she graduated from high school, she applied for a position at Industrial Steel Co. in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Several dozen other women also applied, and when all were tested, Gen, because of her flawless shorthand and errorless typing, won the position. And the "position"? Private Secretary to Mr. Curley, the Company President and CEO. Gen held that position until her Wedding Day. She was a perfect daughter, sister, mother, aunt, Godmother, grandmother and great grandmother. We couldn't ask for more. Mary, Ellen and Bud O Most Gentle Heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in Purgatory, have mercy on the soul of Thy departed servant. Be not severe in Thy judgment but let some drops of Thy Precious Blood fall upon the devouring flames. And do Thou, O Most Merciful Savior, send Thy Holy Angels to conduct Thy departed servant to a place of refreshment, light and peace. Amen. And may her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
