Loving husband to Margaret “Marge” (Fahey) Hunt for 58 years. Loving father of Mary Beth McMahon and her husband, Charlie, of Millis, MA, David Hunt of New Jersey and Natalie of Millis, MA, Sean Hunt and his wife Christine of Hanover, MA, Shannon Graham and her husband Robert “Bob” of Millis, MA and Katelyn Hunt of Milton, MA. Adored Papa of Riane, Molly, Ian, Lucas, Connor, Maggie, Reaghan, Addison, Gavin, Simon, Nolan and Keira and the great-grandfather of Lyla. Also survived by his brother, John Hunt and his wife, Jacqueline, of Washington, DC. Gene’s nieces, nephews, close friends, and family were a treasured part of his life, especially best friends James “Jim” and Patricia “Pat” Gilmartin, Millis, MA.
Gene was born in Boston, MA of Irish immigrant parents from County Kerry. To say he was proud of his Irish Heritage is an understatement. He was a proud Bostonian who loved everything about this city and what it had to offer and always enjoyed showing it off to whomever was in his company. Gene was first and foremost a family man and a patriarch to not only his immediate family but to all who called him Uncle Gene. An avid reader of daily papers and books, Gene was always aiming to enrich his mind with knowledge that would help him and whomever he mentored along the way.
He was constantly staying up to date with the happenings of the world, business and of course his hobby, the financial markets. He loved starting conversations, sometimes lively, about current affairs with whomever was in the room. Nuggets of information he would find in his readings were always cut out and put in envelopes for his children, grandchildren or whomever he knew would need the information. He loved family gatherings and was always the person making sure everyone was involved no matter what was going on. His dancing was so infamous, he had his own dance that very few could replicate, known as the “Gene Dance”.
Gene considered himself blessed from the moment he entered this world through to his lasting days, when he often reflected on all that had been given to him. Truthfully it is to those he has given so much to that he leaves a legacy that grounds us in so many traditions and more importantly in love. In God’s Grace he leaves us but he will live on in so many he loved, befriended and mentored.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Agatha Church, Adams St. at Brook Rd., Milton on Monday, November 15 at 10:30am. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours at the Dolan Funeral Home, 1140 Washington Street, DORCHESTER LOWER MILLS, Sunday 3-7PM. Interment New Calvary Cemetery, Mattapan.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gene’s memory to Special Olympics Massachusetts at 512 Forest St., Marlborough, MA 01752, www.specialolympicsma.org or the Trustees of the Reservation at 20 High St., Boston, MA 02110, https://thetrustees.org.
