Obituary for Eric W. Cherry

Eric W. Cherry, age 54, of Canton and formerly of Milton, passed away on Sunday September 28, 2025 surrounded by his family.

Eric was the devoted husband of Kimberly J. (McLaughlin) Cherry and a proud father to Jason R. Cherry and Lauren S. Cherry of Milton. He was the beloved son of the late Robert F. and Ann Marie (Murphy) Cherry, also of Milton.

He is lovingly remembered by his siblings: Robert F. Cherry Jr. of Baltimore, MD; Brian P. Cherry and his wife Jessica of Milton; Michael A. Cherry of San Antonio, TX; Kevin J. Cherry of Providence, RI; and Colleen E. Wheeler and her husband Richard of Milton.

Eric was a cherished son-in-law to Edward G. McLaughlin and Donna Salomon of Canton, and a caring brother-in-law to Edward B. McLaughlin of Canton. He also shared a meaningful bond with his former wife, Pamela Cherry of Milton. Eric leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.

He is also survived by his English Bulldog, Brock, who always remained by his side.

Eric was born in West Roxbury and moved to Milton where he was raised. He graduated from Don Bosco High School in 1990 and went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Marine Corps for six years. Following his decorated military service, Eric built a career as a Stationary Engineer and Boiler Operator at the AE Power Plant, supporting Boston’s major hospitals. After taking an early retirement, he continued his commitment to helping others by working at the West Roxbury VA Medical Center, where he assisted disabled veterans with compassion and care.

Eric spent his childhood summer vacations on the beaches of West Dennis, Cape Cod. He carried on the summer tradition sharing it with his family, children, and friends. Some of Eric’s happiest moments were at Fenway Park with his children, rooting for the Red Sox, and relaxing together in Turks and Caicos. He also enjoyed Saturday college football, rooting for his favorite team, the Louisville Cardinals, who are off to an undefeated 4-0 record in 2025. Eric and Kim loved visiting casinos, sharing dinners with family and friends, and vacationing together. He also enjoyed golfing with close friends, long walks with his dog Brock around Bolivar Pond in Canton and of course loved his scratch cards.

Eric’s passing leaves a deep void for those that knew and loved him. Our hearts are forever broken and he will be missed beyond measure.

No one will know me most likely but my name is Rick Hilton from Oklahoma. Eric and I were in the Marine Corps together and lived in a 2 man room together for 8 months in 1994-1995 in Okinawa. I was put in his room when i first got to the island and thats how we met. We became friends immediately and it was like we had known each other forever. Eric was the most likable fun guy, best heart you could ever meet. Always a smile and laughing and we did so many things together. Literally sharing a 25x10 room. We always joked with each other about are accents , one Oklahoma okie and one strong northeast boston, totally different backgrounds. It was great. I have told stories about Eric to my friends and family for years, for the stuff we used to do together and how funny he was, just always fun with him. I literally was talking to my son today about him and he went to look him up and i came to find this news. I want to say im so sorry to hear of his passing and i pray for his family. This news was hard for me to take and i had to write this to express my sympathy. Eric was a great friend and always had a smile on his face and a big heart. To this day when i think of him i see him on our room together joking snd laughing, he was a great man

I work at the VA and interacted with Eric a few times a week with regard to linen and gown support for my MRI clinic. Eric was always a jovial spot in my day as we jousted about linen shortages (Where's my yellows I would often plead [yellow gowns are for bigger patients..lots of BIG patients]). A little Navy (me) Marine jabs (Eric). The oft recited the Marines are a department of the Navy (Marine response "The Men's department"). But seriously, Eric was almost always in a good mood. People in a good mood lift the moods of others. Eric delivered the goods in that regard. I'll personally miss him at the VA. Many others will as well. God bless you Eric, and your family.

Many summers spent on the West Dennis beaches. "This is the life, huh Itch! Gorgeous sunny day, playing cribbage with the boys and cold Bud on hand! Nothing better than this!' Two days later its pouring rain. "This is the life, huh Itch! Tucked inside, playing cribbage with the boys and cold Bud! Nothing better than this!" "So what you're telling me, Eric, is there's never a bad day to drink beer and play cribbage." "Pretty much!" Words to live by. Godspeed Eric. Miss you already

Eric I didn't really know you. But our paths sometimes crossed at the VA in West Roxbury. You always struck me as a kind young lad who was caring to everyone. I want to thank you for your service to our Country. I come from a family of Marines. I always go to mass at the Chapel at the VA. And I want you to know today when I went to mass. All your EMS brothers and sisters were there for you. What a beautiful mass in your tribune and what solidarity was there for you. RIP. know you are with our creator Lord Jesus Christ now.
