Obituary for Edward P. Merrigan

MERRIGAN – Edward P. “The Duke”, age 94 of Quincy formerly of Dennisport, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 2, 2026.

Edward grew up in Dorchester, where he shared a close bond with his three siblings. As a young man, he worked alongside his father at Orlando Fruit Company before going on to a long and successful career at Raytheon. He later moved to Cape Cod, where he lived by the ocean until 2000 and opened his home to family and friends for summers shaped by the water, conversation, and laughter. In his later years, he became a resident of Wollaston Manor in Quincy, where he formed many meaningful friendships.

His partner in life was the late Lori Williams, with whom he shared a love of travel. Eddie was known for his warmth, humor, and love of conversation, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met. He generously gave his time to others, especially delighting children and families by volunteering as Santa Claus. You could always find him watching (and quoting) his favorite John Wayne and James Cagney films.

Beloved father of Christine Adams of New Hampshire, and the late Thomas Merrigan, Sr. Loving brother of the late Francis Merrigan, Dorothy Carr, and Mae Teresa Lefevre. Cherished grandfather of Thomas Merrigan of Lincoln, RI, and Patrick Merrigan of Needham. Adoring great-grandfather of Zachary and Denali. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and loyal friends.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 9th at Saint Gregory Parish, 2215 Dorchester Ave., DORCHESTER at 12:00 pm. Interment in Blue Hill Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 9th at the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Ave., EAST MILTON SQUARE from 10:30 – 11:30 am prior to the Mass.

Sending all our love, comfort and prayers to all of Eds family and friends. To know Ed is to love Ed now doubt about it. Not one bad bone in him. He's one in a million. Always looking at life positive and always " moving forward"! Ed was a blessed BEST friend of my Dads ( Frank Maloney) for many wonderful years. Ed would dress as Santa and my Dad would photograph him at different orphanages around the time of Christmas. It was a wonderful thing that the Raytheon company allowed them to partake in. Such a perfect roll of being Santa for Eddie, giving of love always. In the last few years of my life with my Dad and now the three after my Dad has passed I became very connected and kept in constant contact with, "Uncle" Eddie we adopted him as an Uncle. We had so many wonderful conversations reminiscing all of his life with my dad, and all sorts of other wonderful life lived events of his, and he was always so interested in hearing of my life and my whole families lives. Some of my family and I and my hubby would meet up and take "Uncle" Eddie out for a nice relaxing luncheon somewhere along the ocean near where he lived, it was always the best of times with "Uncle" Eddie. We will SOOO much miss him wholeheartedly, but we will always keep him in our every thought, prayers and hearts with cherishing so many wonderful memories we've been so fortunate to have made. I know my Dad's up in Heaven rejoicing as he's reunited with his best/ brother( in every way that matters,) Eddie/ The Duke. May you rest in peace now my sweet angel friend. Love you always and forever, Anne and Dave, and all The Maloney family. ❤️🙏👼❤️ XOXOXO
