Dear Ed, a fine friend, coworker and community organizer. He was heartfelt in everything he did. His courage in volunteering for Vietnam and serving for two years was profound. The key quality of Ed was his realness: he was a genuinely caring person in all aspects of his life. Mary Frances and Polly reflect that quality also. Even remote in time, I do miss him.

Mary Frances and Polly and to all of the O'Brien Family Members and Friends, Please accept my condolences on the loss of your beloved Ed. I had the pleasure of knowing Ed while Ef worked in the Retirement Board. Ed was always approachable and helpful and was the one to see for a solution to be resolved. Ed offered sound advice to many fellow City workers. so they could plan their future retirement. Ed was quiet and never boastful., you never knew he was in the service and received a Bronze Star. Thank you for your service to our country and for all you did for educating us so we could make retirement easier. God Bless you and your family. Michael Kearney Property Mgmt.

Dear Mary Frances and Polly, I am deeply saddened to learn today of Ed's passing. I wish I could be there today and tomorrow, but I'm out of state until the 26th. Ed was a special man in my life, and had a big impact on me, both professionally and personally. He introduced me to Jim O'Donnell, the United Way COBEC campaign, the Neponset River Watershed Association, and with you two, the New England Revolution and the joys of sharing our lives with big dogs. One of my favorite memories (albeit briefly painful) is being accidentally head-butted in a delicate area by the late, great Earl in his excitement greeting me at your house. Gabrielle and I extend our deepest condolences, and our thoughts will be with you.

Ed was the very best of Boston politics and public service: warm, engaging, open-minded, loyal. I met him while working on a planning project for the Boston Redevelopment Authority. Soon after, we were sharing lunches and talking about Boston's history and many characters. He was always interested in the bigger picture, how new generations could offer leadership and how he might help. After I left City Hall, we stayed in touch. Later, I was lucky enough to know and work with his daughter Polly. My goodness, what a wonderful family. To the whole family, and to the many people who called Ed a friend: My deepest condolences. We all carry with us Ed's example of a joyous life.
