Obituary for Dr. David Bartow Sperry
Dr. David Bartow Sperry of Dallas, Texas, passed away on June 28, 2023 at the age of 78 due to complications from Lewy Body Dementia. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 2, 1945 to Marcy Leavenworth Sperry, Jr. and Virginia (Kimball) Sperry. He grew up in Walden, New York.
David attended The Gunnery School in Washington, Connecticut from 1961-1963 and Fettes College in Edinburgh, Scotland from 1963-1964. He graduated from Yale University in 1968 and earned his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan in 1972. He completed his pediatric internship and residency at Children's Memorial Hospital, Chicago, 1972-1974 and his neurology residency at Northwestern McGaw Medical Center, Chicago, 1974-1975. He was a pediatric neurology fellow at North Carolina Memorial Hospital, 1975-1977 and completed his developmental neurology training at the Division for Disorders of Development and Learning at the University of North Carolina Medical School, 1977.
After completing his fellowship, David took a position in Dallas at Southwestern Medical School. He eventually began his private practice, first at Presbyterian Hospital then at Medical City with Dallas Pediatric Neurology. He later went on to work at DuPage Hospital in Chicago (Wheaton, Illinois). David knew he wanted to be a doctor from the time he was in high school. He considered working with children and their families a privilege.
David held numerous academic positions, hospital appointments, and committee posts. Some of these positions included: Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas; Staff Pediatric Neurologist at University Affiliated Center at Dallas; Pediatric Neurologist, Active Staff at Children’s Medical Center and Medical City (both in Dallas); Consulting Pediatric Neurologist at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas and Medical Center of Plano; Vice Chairman, Department of Neurology, Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas; and Director of Ketogenic Diet Clinic, Medical City Hospital, Dallas.
David was also a member of the Child Neurology Society, American Academy of Neurology, Texas Medical Association, Dallas County Medical Society and the Texas Neurological Society.
In addition to his career and accolades as a doctor, David enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid rower and member of the Dallas Rowing Club. He also enjoyed hiking and mountain climbing. The summers he spent with his family at Squam Lake in New Hampshire were always special.
David is preceded in death by his parents, Marcy Leavenworth Sperry, Jr. and Virginia (Kimball) Sperry.
He is survived by his three children, son Josh Sperry of Mill Valley, CA, twin daughters Melissa Sperry of Dallas, TX, and Liza Moore and her husband William of Round Rock, TX, parents of David's grandson, Shepard Stillman Moore; ex-wife, Cindy Sperry of Dallas, TX; brother Marc Sperry and his wife Toni of Walden, NY, and their children David Sperry and Christopher Sperry and their families; sister Margot Mitchell and her husband Greg of Montgomery, NY and their daughter, Erin Sherry and her family.
The family wishes to thank in particular his daughter Melissa Sperry and ex-wife, Cindy Sperry, for caring for David. Cindy opened her home to him when he wanted to come back to Texas to be closer to family. She and Melissa provided around-the-clock care because he wanted to be at home as long as possible.
