Obituary for Dorothy J Battiste
Dorothy J. Battiste December 7, 1934 – December 1, 2025
Dorothy J. Battiste, a woman whose warmth could fill a room and whose dedication to healing touched countless lives, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2025, at Laurel Ridge Rehabilitation & Skilled Care Center in Mattapan. She was 90 years old.
Born in Thomasville, Georgia, Dorothy was the eldest of three children born to Ira and Sylvia C. Mitchell. Her mother later remarried Benjamin Carey, who lovingly embraced the family as his own. From her earliest days, Dorothy radiated a spirit of determination and grace that would define her remarkable life.
At Tuskegee University, Dorothy pursued her Bachelor of Science degree and discovered something even more precious - her college sweetheart, John Percy Battiste. Their love story began in 1954, and on September 26, 1958, they exchanged vows at her family home in North Miami Beach, Florida, beginning a partnership built on mutual respect, shared dreams, and enduring devotion.
A proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Dorothy went on to earn her master’s degree in nursing, dedicating more than 50 years to caring for others as a Registered Nurse. Through her skilled hands and compassionate heart, she brought comfort and healing to generations of patients.
Dorothy was a woman of culture and joy who savored the smooth rhythms of jazz concerts, the magic of Broadway shows, the escape of a good book, the adventure of travel, and movies on the big screen. Education was her passion, and she believed deeply in giving back, pouring into others' lives both financially and intellectually. Her generosity knew no bounds, and her impact rippled through every community she touched.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John P. Battiste; her parents, Ira Mitchell and Sylvia Mitchell Carey; her stepfather, Benjamin Carey; and her siblings, Willie Ira Mitchell and Gloria Jean Ford.
Her memory and legacy of love live on through her nieces and nephews: Michael Z. Ford, Valerie J. Ford, Theodora Ford Chalk, Kenneth P. Ford, and John W. Ford of Miami, Florida; her brother-in-law Ellis Johnson (Marguerite) of New Orleans, Louisiana; her sister-in-law Celestine Stokes of Los Angeles, California; and a host of other relatives and cherished friends.
The family wishes to express deep gratitude to Anthony Breaux (Gail) and Charity Coleman, whose unwavering dedication, love, and support brought comfort and joy to Dorothy's life.
Dorothy J. Battiste lived fully, loved deeply, and gave generously. Though she has left this earthly home, the seeds of kindness she planted will continue to bloom in the lives she touched.
