Obituary for Deacon Joseph Dorlus

Deacon Joseph Dorlus age 66, passed away peacefully at Brigham and Women’s Hospital December 1, 2021 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Joseph Emmanuel Dorlus, affectionately known as “Manno,” was born on December 24, 1954, in Bois Neuf a locality of St. Marc, Haiti to the late Marinette Saintilus and Philoxene Dorlus. He grew up in the next town over in Saint Marc, Haiti, where he spent most of his adolescence. Manno attended Lycée Anténor Firmin and Centre D’étude Senghor high school. He then went on to study Economic Sciences at École de Droit Á Port-Au-Prince. In 1985, Manno emigrated to Boston, MA, USA, where reunited with the love of his life, Marie CW Legerme. The couple married on December 21, 1986, at Saint Angela Parish. They then had their first child Gaëlle Dorlus, and a couple of years later, their son Gidley Dorlus. He also has two adoptive daughters, Daphnide and Floredith Legerme. He went on to study Computer Sciences at Clark University. Manno’s career includes positions as an economist and accountant, as well as time spent working in business administration.

Manno was a man of God and took his faith very seriously. His faith journey began at the Catholic schools in Saint Marc, Haiti, and continued to grow after he and his family joined St. Angela Parish. He was very active at Saint Angela’s Parish, now Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, and over the years held many leadership roles. Manno was the former president of La Sainte Famille (Holy Family group). He was also a Catechist, teaching confirmation classes for high school students. He participated in the RCIA program, where he led non-baptized men and women enter the Catholic Church. This included leading bible studies, prayer meetings, and rites at Mass. In 2010, he enrolled in St. John’s Seminary/Theological Institute for the New Evangelization where he studied to become a Deacon. On October 17th of 2015, he was ordained as a permanent Deacon and continued to work as a pastoral associate at the church until the end of his life. Manno was a devoted husband and father, a wonderful uncle, friend, brother, and servant of the Lord. Though he may not be here with us in the physical body, he will forever live in our hearts.

Manno is survived by his beloved wife, Marie CW Legerme, whom he loved wholeheartedly. He is also survived by his daughter Gaëlle Dorlus and son Gidley Dorlus. Also, his two adopted daughters, Daphnide and Floredith Legerme. In addition, his mother-in-law, Madeleine Legerme, and his sister Orphelia Voltus, who raised Manno as if he were her son. Manno also leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 1548 Blue Hill Avenue, Mattapan, MA on Friday December 10th from 5:00-8:30pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the church on Saturday December 11th at 11am. Interment at Oak Lawn Cemetery.
