Obituary for Charles Mahanor Jr. M.D.

Charles Mahanor, Jr., M.D., was received into everlasting peace by The Lord on February 18th, 2024.

Born in 1928 to Charles and Della Mahanor, he was the oldest of six children. He attended public schools in Brockton, graduating from Brockton High School. Accepted into Tufts University, he received his Bachelor of Science diploma. Charles completed a master’s degree and then enrolled in the Boston University School of Medicine, graduating in 1954. He then did his residency at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, after which he enlisted in the United States Army from 1956-1958, serving as a Captain. He was assigned to Korea, initially with the 44th Surgical Mobile Army Hospital (SHMA). After three months, he was transferred and made Commanding Officer of the 43rd Surgical Mobile Army Hospital, where he led with distinction, receiving a commendation for his service from the Eighth United States Army.

Returning from his enlistment to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, he met his future wife and love of his life, Marjorie. His career took him to the Carney Hospital, where he served on the medical staff from 1959-2015. He practiced general surgery with a specialty in hand surgery. A gifted surgeon, he healed and saved many lives, and made many friendships among the hospital staff. After retiring from his own practice, he “un-retired” to continue surgery in the hospital’s outpatient center, and after several years began treating patients at the Copeland Surgical Center for wound care at the hospital. He served in many roles at Carney Hospital, including Secretary, Vice President, and ultimately President of the hospital’s medical staff. He served on the hospital’s development committee. He was an original founding member of the Carney Hospital Foundation, serving on the board of trustees.

Dr. Charles also mentored and trained surgical residents through the Boston University Medical School surgical training programs. He was also on the medical staff at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, the Milton Hospital and the Youville Hospital (formerly the Holy Ghost Hospital), where he also served as President of the medical staff. During his time at St. Elizabeth’s and Carney, he treated patients at the Chelsea Soldier’s Home. For over 20 years, he worked the 12 hour Friday shift in the Carney Hospital Emergency room. He became the Medical Director at the Liberty Mutual medical unit in Boston, which treated and rehabilitated patients injured through employment. He was a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society, the Norfolk District Medical Society, served on the Guild of St. Luke in many roles including President, and was an active member in St. Agatha’s Parish in Milton and St. Theresa’s Chapel in Marshfield. He was a past member of the Tufts Club and the Humarock Beach Improvement Association.

Charles was married for 37 years to his late wife Marjorie (Gorman). He is the beloved Father of Charles A., Esq., Susan (Bill Curtis), Elizabeth, M.D. and the late Richard. Dear loving Brother to Robert Mahanor, Beverly Jansen, Lawrence Mahanor and the late Donald Mahanor and Alan Mahanor. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. A man of great faith, spirituality and ethics, he lived a long and productive life, being a loving father, son, brother, uncle, colleague, friend, mentor, spiritual leader and guide.

His wake will be held on Sunday March 3 from 1:00p.m.-5:00p.m. at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Ave, EAST MILTON SQUARE. His funeral and remembrance Mass will be held on Monday, March 4 at 10:30a.m. at St. Agatha’s Church, 438 Adams Street, Milton, MA. Interment Milton Cemetery.

As a little girl, Dr Mahanor stitched up my face after a pretty severe dog bite...to this day,(50+years later) my "scars" just look like dimples...his precision was fantastic...thank-you, and rest in peace,dr. Mahanor...

Dr. Mahanor was very much a part of our daily life, from seeing him at St. Agatha's, to going to school with his sons, and to being treated by him for my inevitable accidents working in the fish market at Anthony's Pier 4. God rest him and blessings for his family.

Charlie, Susan, Elizabeth,Beverly, Bob, Larry & family I will be with you in spirit as we lay Charlie to rest. If he had to leave us I'm glad he went peacefully & was surrounded by as much I've as he gave and that his suffering wasn't prolonged. I know he hated funerals and when he came to my mom's I said "My mother's laughing at you you know." He replied "Only for your mother." Family meant everything to him. He loved our Christmas partIes. One year we got snowed out & he was the only one who came because he had 4 wheel drive. His arrival with his baklava meant the party could start. He's mow in heaven & the welcome home party has started. His parents, Marjorie & Richard, & his brothers have been waiting for him and his smile is broad. He has so much to tell them about us.. We will miss him and love him always but he is home safe. He is a good man. Love alway

Dr. Charles Mahanor operated on my brother's hand after a car accident and subsequent medical care left my brother with an appendage that was not working correctly. His excellent surgical skills enable my brother to regain 98% usage. There are no words to describe my family's appreciation of this miracle.
