Obituary for Catherine Owens
Catherine Owens lovingly known as “Stella” or “Cat”, born on October 15, 1942 in Yamasee, South Carolina, Blue House Lane. She was the only daughter of the late Ethel Mae Brown and “Peg Leg Joe” as she jokingly called her father. Catherine departed this life and entered her eternal rest on June 24, 2025. She was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer, which ultimately ended her watch here on earth.
Catherine was raised in the Gullah-Geechee culture by her grandmother Amanda Brown in the low country of South Carolina. It was there that she received her initial education at White Hall Elementary in Yamasee, SC and finished her formal education at Girls High School in Boston MA. After finishing her education in Boston, she moved back to South Carolina where she was introduced to her husband the late William Owens, a servicemen home on leave from the army. They married, and thru their union four children were born. Throughout her life she lived in SC, MA and KY. She lived a multi-talented life, she was a midwife-birthing many of her younger cousins, she was a care taker to everyone, their kids (and their dogs), a provider for all those who needed her, an amazing cook, an overall loving kind daughter, sister, mother, aunt, grandmother, & friend.
For over 15 years Catherine worked as an Environmental Service Associate at Children’s Hospital. Thereafter she worked her final job at Newton Wellesley Hospital before she suffered a stroke. There she held the position as a cook, which was her love language. She could make a four-course meal out of anything. Catherine was a personable individual, “the life of the party”. You put on James Brown, Al Green, Otis Redding or Marvin Seas, and she would hit the dance floor ready to “shimmy and shake it on down” as she would say. Catherine was a loving and caring person and will always be remembered by those whose lives she touched. During her final years she enjoyed being surrounded by her family, especially her grand & great grandchildren, doing word search puzzles, drinking her coffee while watching 1980’s TV series & sitcoms
Catherine was preceded in death by her brothers Richard Lee (Ham), Alexander (Bummie), and Sterling (Gizmo), Garrison, late husband William Owens, daughter Sandra Owens and grandson Christopher Owens. She leaves with loving and cherished memories 3 children Carlee, Terry Lynn, and Patricia Ann Owens of Boston, Mass. One niece Valerie Brown, of Jersey City, NJ. She leaves 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.
