Obituary for Bernard Vaughan Fallon
Bernard Vaughan Fallon, Ed.D., 86, formerly of Cheshire, Massachusetts, passed away on August 2, 2022, at Calvary Hospital in Bronx, New York. The cause was complications from Alzheimer’s disease and COVID-19.
Bernard was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, on August 20, 1935, to George Fallon and Phyllis (Vaughan) Fallon.
Bernard was captain of the football team and graduated from North Quincy High School, before serving in the United States Navy then the Navy Reserve. He graduated from Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service, then later received a Master of Education in social studies from Boston State College, and from Northeastern University he received the following degrees: Master of Arts in history, Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in educational administration, and Doctor of Education.
Professionally, before his career in teaching and education, Bernard worked in a diversity of areas including operating IBM Tabulating Machines in the 1950s for Boston Gear Works, the National Security Agency, and GEICO, conducting aerial photography and analysis for the United States Navy, taking reservations for Trans World Airlines, as well as serving ice cream at the original branch of Howard Johnson’s restaurant.
His career in education started with teaching social studies at South Boston High School, then included teaching history and social studies at Hingham High School, assistant principal of Hingham High School, high school principal in Easton and in Springfield, VT, associate superintendent of schools in Cohoes, NY, assistant superintendent of Hampshire Regional School District, then from 1988-1998 superintendent of schools for Adams-Cheshire Regional School District (now Hoosac Valley Regional School District). After attempting retirement, he then continued to support the development of education in Berkshire County with multi-month interim positions as assistant superintendent for Central Berkshire Regional School District, special education program administrator for Norther Berkshire Regional Vocational Technical School District, and Chairman of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges Visiting Committee for accreditation of high schools where he helped certify 10 high schools before his complete retirement. Bernard was a former president of the Berkshire County School Superintendents Roundtable.
He was particularly proud of expanding the international and technological perspectives of students, repeatedly introducing programs for students to visit other countries, for access to Model United Nations clubs, and for expanding availability of Advanced Placement courses in mathematics and sciences. Inspired by his personal experience with the earliest IBM Tabulating Machines and their punch cards for programming, he was the first administrator to introduce access to personal computers and then internet access for teachers and students through the schools where he worked. Additionally, he was proud to have helped secure state funding for four different, major school reconstruction projects that continue to provide long-lasting, high-quality facilities for the education of students.
For the community, Bernard was active across many decades in the American Red Cross, Lions Club International, Rotary Club, and the Knights of Columbus. For the parishes in which he lived, he often taught Sunday school. For more than 25 years he was a parishioner at Cheshire’s St. Mary of the Assumption.
Personally, he enjoyed learning through travel, museums, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood Music Center where he took his wife Eleanor for their first trip. In his youth, he was an avid sailor, swimmer, and downhill skier with his brothers, sisters, and their children.
Bernard was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Eleanor Desmond Fallon, by his brothers George Fallon, Jr., John Fallon, Charles Fallon, James Fallon, and sisters Patricia O’Doherty, Sheila Burke, and Maureen Baron.
Bernard is survived by his children Eleanor M. Fallon of New York City, and Bernard V. Fallon, Jr. of Washington, DC, as well as by brother Thomas Fallon of Davie, Fl.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Mary of the Hills Church, 29 Saint Mary’s Road, Milton, on Friday, August 12, at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends invited. Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. No separate visitation hours are scheduled.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Bernard with a memorial contribution are kindly asked to consider the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund.
