Obituary for Bernard A. Andrew

Bernard Albert Andrew was born on August 11, 1965 to Gerard Andrew and Vernice Clementine Joseph on the beautiful nature island of Dominica in the Caribbean. He passed away peacefully surrounded with love on March 31, 2025, at Mass General Hospital in Boston.

On August 5, 1989 he got married to the love of his life Antoinette Loftin Andrew and their union birthed two beautiful children, a son, Christopher Bernard Andrew and daughter, Alisha Antionette Andrew.

In 1977, Bernard immigrated to Boston, Massachusetts with his mother and siblings. He attended Woodrow Wilson Middle School, where he was recognized as an exceptionally great student with a sharp mind and a compassionate heart. He later attended East Boston High School, where his academic excellence continued to shine. His commitment and dedication earned him a full scholarship to attend the Wentworth Institute in Boston, Massachusetts. An achievement that reflected his hard work, dedication, intelligence, and determination.

At the age of 18, Bernard began working at H.C. Starck (later acquired by Materion in 2021), a company known for producing durable metals used in semiconductors, aerospace, defense, and various industrial applications. Although the work was demanding, Bernard approached it with determination, focus, and integrity. His dedication was evident at H.C. Starck, he was promoted from the position of Utility Worker to Group Leader, and eventually to Supervisor. Bernard became highly skilled in operating all of the company’s machinery, and was respected as a go-to expert on the floor. He also took great pride in mentoring and training his coworkers, his belief was “hard work, clean living.” Many of whom advanced in their own careers thanks to his guidance and support. His legacy at the company lives on through the people he trained and the example he set.

Affectionately known as “Berns” to family, friends, and acquaintances, he lived as a true man, compassionate, principled, and morally strong. His caring heart saw the best in people. He lived his life with a strong conviction that each person is an individual, not defined by color or nationality. He often said that he lived his life not by seeing a man’s color as definition, but by looking at whether “men are either good or evil and there is only right and wrong, not color to define us.” He believed that some people were good at their core, while others were not.

Bernard was a family man. His close friends and family members referred to him as “Berns”, “Baby Al”, or “B”. He was a kind, caring relative, always there for his family members, offering them consistent guidance and love. Bernard’s warmth and generosity extended far beyond his immediate family and cared for all deeply. He showed them that hard work, honesty, love, and respect are the cornerstones of achieving success and fulfillment. Family gatherings were always made special by Bernard’s presence. It was a treat to see him surrounded by his community. They would gather around him for a moment to speak, share a laugh, or listen to his thoughtful words. Bernard had a special way of making everyone feel important and heard, leaving a lasting impression on all who were lucky enough to be in his circle.

Bernard Albert Andrew was survived by his wife, Antoinette Loftin Andrew, his two children, Christopher Bernard Andrew and Alisha Antoinette Andrew, and numerous siblings, uncle, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Bernard will be lovingly remembered.

Sure knew of his love for family. Although I didn't know him personally, we shared siblings. The common thread was that he was keen on establishing and maintaining family bonds with warmth. May he rest in eternal peace and may his legacy live on forever. Sending hugs of strength to all.

I am so sorry to hear about Bernard's passing. I worked with him at HC Starck from 1986 to 2023. He was a great guy and a caring father & husband. He was taken way too soon. I have a heavy heart writing this. He had a personality and heart that was too big to measure. I can't count the number of times he talked me into working overtime when I was trying to go home. My heart and prayers go out to Toni and the family. Love to all.
