Obituary for Barry G. Curran, Sr.
Barry G. Curran, Sr., a proud South Boston native, longtime Milton resident, and loving family man, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2026.
Born in Southie to the late James and Nancy (Ross) Curran, Barry moved to Milton at a young age, where he grew up, graduated from Milton High School, and ultimately lived most of his life.
His strong work ethic and commitment to public service were woven throughout his very diverse career. He began working at the Federal Reserve Bank before being drafted into military service, where he proudly served his country in the Vietnam War. His career path also included dedicated years of employment with the United States Post Office, the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority (Mass Pike), the Boston Police Department and lastly his favorite job, at Granite Links Golf Course, where he worked as a starter. Firmly believing that he had earned the right to his education through his military service, he later utilized the GI Bill to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree from UMass Boston at the age of 62, approximately 30 years following his service.
Barry’s life was filled with wonderful adventures, especially alongside his beloved wife, Maureen Skerry Curran, who would have been his partner for over 50 years. Together, they shared a deep sense of curiosity which was always taking them on a drive anywhere and everywhere just to check out anything new. Closer to home, he found immense joy in the simple pleasure of taking rides in his car with his faithful dog, Rylee. He was also famously known by family and friends for what could only be described as a lifelong obsession with Dunkin' Donuts; he simply could never drive by one without going in or swinging through the drive thru.
Barry's love of sports ran deep. A die-hard, lifelong fan of Boston sports, he lived and breathed the local teams, but he was most devoted to the Boston Bruins. He rarely missed a game, and his entire day completely revolved around making sure he could watch his hometown Bruins take the ice. Throughout his working career and raising his children, he spent a tremendous amount of time on the sidelines and in the stands, faithfully following his own children as they played sports throughout their formative, high school, and college years. In his later years, he embraced life as a snowbird, trading the harsh New England winters for Virginia. This move was driven by his deepest joy, being closer to his cherished grandchildren and getting to cheer them on and enjoy watching them play sports as well.
With his distinct presence and his congenial personality, Barry was affectionately known as the unofficial "mayor" of his neighborhood, a title cemented by the many neighbors and friends who regularly checked in on him just to see how he was doing. His pockets were consistently lined with treats for those neighbor’s dogs! He loved snacks himself! His children, their friends and his grandchildren would refer to him as “Snacks” as he was known for late night dives into the “cookie jar" indulging in whatever he could find. He was a remarkably generous person who was thought of as a consummate tipper, always showing deep appreciation for the work of others and bringing a bit of joy to anyone who crossed his path.
Barry leaves behind a legacy of love through his children Christopher Skerry Curran (Kerri), of Canton, MA, Kerry Curran DeShazo (Jimmy), of Glen Allen, VA, and Patrick Moore Curran (Jeff Crawford), of Cumberland, RI; his grandchildren of McAlister DeShazo, Owen DeShazo, and Meghan DeShazo, all of Glen Allen, VA; and his devoted brothers, James Curran, of Foxboro, MA, and John Curran, of Hingham, MA.
Barry was predeceased by his beloved wife, Maureen Skerry Curran; his son, Barry Curran, Jr.; his parents, James and Nancy Curran; and his sister, Joan Stentiford.
