Obituary for Augustine John Newton
Augustine John Newton, also known as Gus or Gustin, was born August 30th, 1941 in the beautiful spice island of Grenada. He was the beloved son of Elcina Branch and Rufus Frank. In his youth, he attended school in Pomme Rose, St. Davids where he picked up the trade of carpentry, where he built houses that till this day still stand, and a school that some of his kids attended before he immigrated to the United States in March of 1987 to begin a new life. Augustine became a maintenance worker at Bournewood Medical Center in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts and remained there until his retirement in 2018.
A stubborn one, Augustine was. But he loved and cared for his family. He shared his love of fishing, hunting, gardening and of course carpentry, things that now resonate with his kids as they too gained a love for his passions in their own lives. The care he had for his family also resonates with the later generations, always making sure they were happy as a grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle would. In his own little ways, he let it be known that his family mattered greatly to him and that he loved them all dearly.
After a long battle with dementia, Augustine passed away on February 10th, 2025. He was predeceased by his mother Elcina, his father Rufus, his brother Cutbert, and daughter Denise. He is survived by his wife, Theresa Joan Newton, their children Yvonne, Hazel-Ann, Ann (Pauline), Matthew, Eugene (Tony), Augustine Jr. (John), Marsha (Lisa), Ryan, Ria, Ava, Wilma and Debra Grant, Chad Noel, 25 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Other family members include the Franks of both Canada and Grenada, the Creelands and his friends Manny, Sean and Rufus.
Augustine’s caring soul will be greatly missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing him. He was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend.
