Obituary for Aretha Mason
Aretha Gladys Davis Mason, 99, of Roxbury, passed away on May 15, 2024, at the Edgar P. Benjamin Healthcare Center, Boston, Ma.
Aretha, fondly known as "Bop" was born on January 25, 1925, to the late Lee and Mary Belle Simmons Davis in Henrico County, Virginia. Aretha received her education in the Glen Allen Public School System.
In 1943, Aretha migrated to Boston, Massachusetts, where she found employment at Jimmy Yung Laundry on Washington Street in Dorchester. Aretha was a hardworking and loyal employee, ironing, and folding garments for 30 years. Then, she sought employment at AT&T as an Assembler Worker for over ten years and finally retired.
Aretha was married to the late John H. Mason on June 27, 1981. She read and talked about the bible, listened to talk radio shows, and financially supported several non-profit organizations and ministries. Aretha was a member of St. Luke A.M.E. Zion Church in Dorchester for many years, then later joined St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Roxbury and was a faithful member until her death.
Aretha is survived by her nieces, caregiver Shirley White, Diane Cerda, Wardella (John) Grubbs, and Marsha White; and nephews, Stanley (Marcia) Walker, Ricardo Walker, Lester White, and Stanford White. Sister-in-law, Clinnie Mason; close friend, Emma Walker, and a special caregiver and neighbor, Inez Cooks, in addition to a host of relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her brothers, Lee Jr., Douglas, Mitchell, and Thomas Davis.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to the wonderful nurses and staff at Edgar P. Benjamin Healthcare Center for their compassionate care, and the staff of Gentiva Hospice Services.

Viewing will be held at St. John's Missionary Baptist Church, 230 Warren Street, Roxbury on Monday, May 20th from 10-11AM. Funeral Service to begin at 11AM. Interment at Mount Hope Cemetery
