Obituary for Andrew P. Foley MD

Andrew P. Foley, MD passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on October 25, 2025, shortly after celebrating sixty-six years of marriage.

Born on March 27, 1927, in Galway City, County Galway Ireland, to the late Charles and Annie (Martin) Foley. He grew up in Curraghroe in beautiful Co. Roscommon with his brother Sean and two sisters Una and Margaret. Carefree summers were spent in Salthill, Galway where he was spoiled by his aunts Katie and Winnie, Proprietors of the Grand Hotel. He graduated from St. Joseph's College, Garbally Park, County Galway in 1946 and received his M.D. in 1953 at University College Galway. He served a rotating internship at the University Hospital in Galway. Following this, he served two years at Merlin Park Hospital.

Coming to the United States in July of 1956, Dr. Foley had three years medical residency at Carney Hospital. He also served a year at Robert Breck Brigham, taking up the study of arthritis and joint diseases. He then returned to Carney Hospital as a teaching fellow in medicine. He opened his office for the practice of internal medicine at 135 South Main St., Randolph and continued to work at the Carney for 45 years. In addition to the Carney, he was affiliated with Milton Hospital and numerous nursing homes where he was universally adored by his patients.

Andrew is survived by his loving wife Faith (Hamilton) Foley of Milton, and their nine children: Edward Foley (Sarah) of Scituate, Ann Macdonald of Braintree, Matthew Foley of Milton, Katie Foley of Quincy, Maura Foley of Milton, Faith A. Foley of Milton, Sean Foley (Bettyann) of Weymouth, Andrew Foley Jr. of Milton and Elizabeth Foley of Milton. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Grace, Eleanor, Elizabeth Foley, Matthew and Harry Macdonald, and Declan, Andrew and Seamus Foley.

Andrew enjoyed a long career and was dedicated to his patients, but his heart was really at home with his wife and children. His faith was central to his life, guiding him in all he did. He loved his garden and worked tirelessly from Spring through Fall to get the gardens just right. For many years tennis and golf were his recreational passions. You wouldn't know unless you played against him that he was a fierce competitor. When he could no longer play competitively, for Andy, the thrill was gone. In his final days he enjoyed the company of his family and if weather allowed, and even when it didn't, a good cigar on the porch. He lived and died at his home of over fifty years as was his wish, supported by the gentle, loving care of his family with invaluable help from the Norwell VNA and Hospice.

Mrs. Foley and the Foley family: Dr. Foley was the epitome of a gentle and kind man. He could brighten any room with his smile. I was moved by his dedication to his family and towards his loving wife, Faith. I was amazed at his innate skill of cultivating a beautiful garden for all to share. He will be remembered him fondly. To Mrs Foley and family my sincere condolences. My first memories of Dr Foley were the doctor parties at our family home. My father considered him a superb physician. He was witty, erudite, insightful and unabashedly Irish. May we never say goodbye. Until the morrow. William Ernesti
