Obituary for Altamont Harvey Stokes
Surrounded by loved ones, Altamont โAlโ Harvey Stokes passed away on October 22, 2024, at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, from complications of a recent pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
Born November 14, 1945, in Boston, MA, to parents, Townsend, Sr. and Jennie (Rivers) Stokes of Orangeburg, S.C., Al was one of seven children, who was affectionately known as โBrother.โ He and his family resided in Roxbury, MA before relocating to Randolph, MA. in 1954, where Al maintained permanent residency. As a graduate of Randolph High Schoolโs Class of 1964, Al enlisted in the United States Army serving in the Vietnam War. He spent three years fighting for his country, primarily stationed in Germany. On November 29, 1967, Al was honorably discharged as a Sergeant selected for a recommended promotion.
After a few years of odd jobs, Al found his chosen family at Pipefitters Local 537, where he was a proud member for 51 years. An active union member until his sunset, Al would regularly attend meetings to fiercely advocate on behalf of his pipefitter brothers and sisters, unafraid to challenge the status quo, ending many nights over sushi and drinks with his buddies. Being a union pipefitter and welder afforded Al many opportunities to travel the country for work assignments. While working in states such as Florida, Michigan, Texas, New Hampshire and Arizona, he immersed himself in American culture.
In his free time, Al amplified his love for different ethnic cuisines, African American history, art, Jazz, Blues and Westerns through sightseeing and museums. Additionally, Al was known for hosting gatherings for his family and friends. He loved to bring everyone together to bond over ribs, chicken, alcohol and music. It was his way of keeping everyone connected.
Al is survived by his daughter, Danyelle Stokes, currently of Jacksonville, FL; his sisters, Ruth Lender and Margie Bryant, both of Mattapan, MA; his twin sister, Alfreda Stokes of Randolph, MA; and numerous extended family members. He is predeceased by his father, Townsend Stokes, Sr.; mother, Jennie Stokes; brother, Townsend Stokes, Jr.; and sisters, Shirley Burton and Barbara Lender.
Al is beloved and missed by everyone who knew him and was positively impacted by his sense of humor. Today is a day of celebration to honor his life and legacy. It is his opportunity to host a final gathering in his remembrance. May he be at peace and his soul eternally rest in Heaven with all his loved ones who have gone before him.
